“If you have frizzy hair and you end up using a lot of bleach or really light oxidants, the colour can damage your hair even further.
Ok, first thing's first—if you're asking yourself, “Do highlights look good on curly hair?” the answer is a resounding yes! Highlights look seriously gorgeous on spiral strands, adding just the right amount of definition to your already defined hair texture.
"Because the hairs are thicker naturally, dark hair is better at camouflaging damage than light hair; it weighs down flyaways and split ends," notes Adrian Wallace, senior colorist at Rita Hazan Salon in NYC.
COLOURED OR BLEACHED HAIR:
Coloured and blonde hair is usually frizzy because it a bit more damaged than natural hair (or a LOT more damaged, depending on what you've been doing to it!). In this case you are going to need a strengthening shampoo.
Caramel, honey, gold, copper, and strawberry give a healthy brightness that makes us look and feel younger. (Framing your face with lighter shades draws the eye away from any complexion concerns, as well.)
' Basically, as your skin tone lightens with age, so should your hair colour. 'When you first notice white hairs, ask your hairdresser to blend them, and eventually you'll move to a lighter natural colour' explains Ashleigh.
Red may be the biggest hair-color trend for fall, but it's no one-shade pony. Here, five ways to go crimson this season.
“Depending on your natural hair texture, strands can become coarser or more fragile as you go gray,” explains Liang. “Hair color can be good for your hair texture, as the fatty lipids in it can mean less flyaways and frizz.” Corbett says.
"Make sure your hair is moisturized enough — dryness is typically what causes frizz," said Roszak. So, if your ends are frizzy, it's probably due to a lack of conditioner. As for products, steer clear of heavy oils or anything that contains wax, Kimble told us.
Adding layers to your tresses perfects the 'messy bedhead' look, and tames your frizziness at the same time.
Try a Hair Oil Treatment
Well-moisturized hair is naturally shinier—and applying hair oils is the fastest way to boost hydration levels. "Oils close the cuticle to help reflect light," says Townsend.
Frizz typically starts at the ends, so regular trims (about every eight weeks) are key. And avoid a full head of highlights or bleaching hair solid blond—both leave the cuticle so porous and open that it's nearly impossible to smooth hair, says Serafino. To manage frizz and keep hair sleek, the cuticle must lay flat.
And even people with curly hair will be quick to admit that frizzy, messy, and dry curls aren't the most professional look, especially when you have those renegade strands and flyaways adding to your unkempt appearance.
All-over color is usually cheaper than highlights because it takes less time and work. Highlights also are more likely to damage your hair. Many of the formulas for highlights contain bleach, which dries out your hair.
If you've been lightening your hair for years with highlights or single process, going darker will give the appearance of softer, shinier, healthier hair. The reason being darker colors fill in porous hair better making it look less, well, fried.
Using a no ammonia hair color reduces damage to your hair drastically. Most ammonia-free hair colors last longer than colors formulated with ammonia. One of the best hair colors without ammonia is the Garnier Black Naturals range.
Most women think brunette hair is the sexiest, as 25% of those polled favoured this option. Womens' second preference is blonde, which was voted as the sexiest hair colour by 19.6% of women. Again, red took third spot, accounting for 11.8% of womens' votes.
Rich Chocolate
Rich is 2023's primary descriptor, and this goes double for brunettes. Those opting to stay in their brown-mane lane would do well to consider crossing fully into the dark side. Roszak recommends subtle, dimensional highlights—more for shine then anything else—and an overall deepening of the hue.
“The shag— or super layered hair cut— is the trend,” says Saviano. “It works on almost every hair texture and length, and you can even style this look with or without bangs. It gives off a cool, low maintenance vibe, and truly brings out the best of natural hair texture, as the layered cut gives the hair movement.”
