Lip balm made with cocoa butter, like our Mongo Kiss, can sometimes have a grainy texture. This is actually called "blooming". Cocoa butter is made of differing combinations of saturated solid fats and unsaturated liquid fats. These fats each have different melting points.
If you're making something like a lip balm (something with a fairly high wax content) you can do this at room temperature, but if you're working with just butters you'll want to immerse your container in an ice bath to speed things along.
Place the open container in the fridge or freezer for approximately 10 minutes, or until the balm is hardened. That's it! Enjoy your nice, smooth EOS. Once settled, remove from freezer and snap the bottom of the container firmly to put the pieces back together.

Temperature variation during shipping is usually the #1 cause of a grainy texture in butters and balms. During hotter months, butters and balms can partially melt and then cool down too slowly, creating the perfect conditions for that grainy, gritty feeling.
The bulk of the lip balm is rich, glossy castor oil and creamy cetearyl alcohol. Cetearyl alcohol provides thickening along with being a wonderful emollient, and allows us to use less wax and still get a firm, creamy end product.
However, if you do find yourself needing to fix a grainy whipped body butter, start with gently re-melting the butter in a bowl that you'll be able to whip in. Once the butter has melted we need to cool it and whip it, keeping it cool enough throughout whipping (remember—whipping introduces heat!)
While the formulation of this product does contain moisturizing ingredients, it also contains ingredients that are known to potentially trigger allergic contact dermatitis of the lips, including flavors and lanolin. This is why I don't recommend this product for those with dry, chapped lips.
EOS's un-medicated chapsticks contain limonene and linalool, both of which are poisonous to dogs. These ingredients are usually derived from inconsistent sources like essential oils, so it's hard to be certain how much a dog will have eaten.

You can't be physically addicted to ChapStick. Even if you feel like you're missing a limb when you don't have any with you, it's more likely that it's a habit rather than a true addiction. There are plenty of ways to keep your lips moisturized and get rid of chapped lips without reaching for a lip balm.
Answers. Lip balm does expire, but there isn't a "one time fits all" expiration date. When it comes to lip balms containing sunscreens and skin protectants (i.e. zinc oxide or titanium dioxide), both ChapStik and Burt's Bees recommend tossing the balms after one year.
“Lip balms containing ingredients like phenol, menthol and salicylic acid actually make your lips drier. So you apply more, and it becomes a vicious cycle.” Some of these product also cause a tingling feeling when you apply them. This either causes irritation or removes outer layers of the skin, like an exfoliant.
Each jar of Vaseline and all other products that are made of petroleum jelly come either with an expiry date or a “best if used by” written on the label. Unilever recommends that people use their Vaseline jars within three years of its production.
