Germany-based Beiersdorf has opened a new Nivea factory in Shanghai to support future growth plans in China. The company has invested €18m in the new facility, which will produce Nivea body care products for China and other Asian countries.

In my experience, German Nivea is firmer in texture and has more thickness, but only slightly. It has a pleasant smell that reminds me of citrus mixed with a vintage-smell type of flower, like rose or lavender. It quickly absorbs into my skin and leaves it soft and smooth.
The German formula doesn't contain mineral oil, microcrystalline wax, or petroleum. Its texture, as Pavitt points out, is also heavier and more matte than the American one, making it slightly harder to rub in. “The texture is way thinner in the States and you look very shiny after putting it on," she says.
The “mother of all creams” was named for its white colour, and the word NIVEA is derived from the Latin word “nix, nivis” meaning snow.
The original brand is owned by Germany company Beiersdorf which debuted its signature NIVEA Crème in 1911. In 1971, Beiersdorf and Japan's Kao Corporation jointly created Nivea-Kao Co., Ltd. to produce NIVEA products that are made in Japan.

Nivea is a personal care brand that specialises in skincare and bodycare products. It is owned by the Hamburg-based company Beiersdorf. The company was originally founded in 1882 by Paul Beiersdorf. In 1890, it was sold to Oscar Troplowitz, who worked with Beiersdorf's associate to develop a new skincare cream.
NIVEA SUN Recall (April 2022)
Following product testing, NIVEA Sun (owned by Beiersdorf) recalled in April 2022 two batches that had been identified as having levels of benzene above the 2 part per million (ppm) permissible levels set of the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
They're both very similar to the German version, the main difference being the lack of petrolatum in the latter. Although super similar, Nivea and La Mer aren't 100% identical. Creme De La Mer contains a bunch of antioxidants, which, at first sight, makes it a much better option than the cheaper Nivea Creme.
However, in actuality, among the 96% of German respondents who know Nivea, 49% of people like the brand.
The majority of the Nivea Creme formula consists of occlusives like mineral oil, petrolatum, lanolin alcohol, and paraffin. These ingredients create a physical barrier on top of the skin. They feel thick and heavy after application since they are not absorbed into the skin.
American NIVEA is produced in a plant in Mexico and has a slightly different formulation than its European counterpart.
Weaknesses of Nivea
Changing Brand Identity –This is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, Nivea has a fantastic benefit by covering a lucrative market: cold cream. But on the other hand, if it has to thrive, it has to change its brand name and become more of a personal care brand.
TV host Caroline Flack said: “I've used Nivea Creme since I was 10.” And Joan Collins has said: “I have used Nivea cleanser for as long as I can remember.” Louise Redknapp added: “Nivea is my go-to moisturiser. I don't really believe in, and have never brought into, really expensive creams.”
