The FDA found the highest lead levels in lipsticks made by three manufacturers: Procter & Gamble (Cover Girl brand), L'Oreal (L'Oreal, Body Shop and Maybelline brands) and Revlon.
The FDA's most recent analysis found the highest lead concentration — 7.19 parts per million — in Maybelline's Color Sensational Pink Petal lipstick.
Over the years, there have been reports alleging dangerous levels of lead in lipstick. FDA has analyzed hundreds of lipsticks and other cosmetic lip products, such as lip glosses, for lead. We found that levels of lead in these products were from below the detection limit to about 7 ppm.
Start by putting two swatches of the lipstick you want to test on your skin. Now, rub the gold ring or pendant on one of the swatches so that you can compare the two. If the colour of the lipstick changes, it contains lead. If it goes darker and starts getting towards black, the concentration of lead is more.
In 2012 the FDA conducted a study on 400 different types of lipstick and found that 61% of them contained a dangerous level of lead and other toxic heavy metals. L'Oreal, Maybelline, Revlon, Cover Girl, Avon, NARS and Mac were the worst of culprits.
Our findings: 61 percent of lipsticks contained lead, with levels ranging up to 0.65 parts per million. Lead-contaminated brands included L'Oreal, Cover Girl and even a $24 tube of Dior Addict.
Brands like Max Factor, Fendi, Color Bar and Eyetex Dazzler had lead from 16ppm to 20ppm. While, Lakme (D414 Freespirit Lipcolor) had 21ppm to 25ppm of lead. Similarly, in case of brown colour most of the brands tested, contained 16ppm to 20ppm of lead.
