Lidocaine, Prilocaine & Epinephrine Numbing Cream This combination is widely regarded as the best numbing cream for microneedling, laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures like injectables. Numbing lasts up to 3-4 hours after removal.
The active ingredient in most numbing creams is lidocaine, though some clinics offer stronger, prescription-strength options, such as BLT, a combination of benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine. BLT is known for being the most powerful numbing cream used for laser treatments.
Emla is used to numb the skin prior to medical and cosmetic needle procedures, such as blood tests and injections. The cream can also be used for superficial skin procedures involving needles or lasers, such as tattoos, laser hair removal and cosmetic dermal procedures.
Apply numbing cream all over the area that will be treated. Leave on for 15-30 minutes, depending on the numbing agent used. Make sure to get the numbing on the scalp and not in the hair. Part the hair and use Q-tips for easier application.
1) Benzocaine/lidocaine/tetracaine cream - commonly prescribed by providers for electrolysis, this custom cream can offer better and longer-lasting numbing than over the counter creams.
Fast Acting & Long Lasting: 5% Lidocaine is the strongest over the counter formulation topical numbing cream on the market that starts working in 2-3 minutes after application and lasts for an hour from its peak.

Wash your scalp and hair with a mild shampoo to remove oils and dirt. Pat your hair and scalp dry with a clean towel. If you have hair longer than a few inches, use a comb to divide your scalp into sections for easier microneedling.
Before you start needling your skin, apply enough hydrating serum on the area of concern. This is to help lubricate the skin and ensure the pen glides across the skin while maximising the benefit of microneedling treatment. Use serums such as Hyaluronic Acid serum, peptides, ceramides, or EGF for microneedling.
Topicaine had the greatest serum levels of individual lidocaine absorption (0.808 µg/mL), followed by generic EMLA (0.72 µg/mL), LMX-4 (0.44 µg/mL), BLT (0.17 µg/mL), and LET (0.13 µg/mL). On average, Topicaine had the highest serum lidocaine and MEGX levels: 0.438 µg/mL and 0.0678 µg/mL, respectively.
A Microneedling Breakthrough
Dermapen 4is the less painful microneedling device on the market. We don't recommend a microneedling numbing cream when undergoing a Dermapen 4 procedure, because it's so comfortable.
Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure for your skin. Your healthcare provider uses thin needles to make tiny holes in the top layer of your skin.
Numbing creams offer safe topical pain relief when chosen and used carefully for laser hair removal. Numbing creams can significantly improve comfort during laser hair removal treatments. Look for proven topical anesthetics like lidocaine and properly apply to treatment areas around 30 minutes before your session.
Lidocaine is used as a local anesthetic to help keep you from feeling pain caused by many procedures. This medication is also used to help treat pain from scrapes, insect bites, and minor burns. Here at CVS Pharmacy®, you can find a wide range of lidocaine products, from skin cream to spray to patches.
Lidocaine skin cream is available on prescription. You can also buy it from a pharmacy to use before any cosmetic procedure involving a needle. Some of the skin creams contain lidocaine mixed with other local anaesthetics such as prilocaine.
For optimal results and safety, it is generally recommended to use a derma roller on dry hair. Applying the derma roller to dry hair ensures better absorption and penetration of the needles into the scalp, allowing for more efficient stimulation of the hair follicles and increased blood flow to the area.
Microneedling procedures aren't painful, but they can be uncomfortable, especially for patients who may be afraid of needles. Microneedling uses tiny needlepoints to create punctures within the dermis; doing so helps encourage the body's collagen and elastin production, leading to younger and smoother-looking skin.
Clinical studies have indicated that the optimal needle depth for microneedling is typically 1.5mm. This depth allows the needles to penetrate the dermis, accessing a greater supply of blood capillaries, which triggers a potent inflammatory response.
The Microneedling on the Scalp Process
A session should last 10-20 minutes, depending on the scalp area you're treating. In this treatment, you can also apply either hyaluronic acid or hair restoration serum to enhance the effectiveness of the microneedling treatment.
Lidocaine is a stronger, yet equally effective, local anesthetic than Benzocaine and its effects last for approximately 90 minutes. Benzocaine is considered to be less severe in nature and its effects last for around ten minutes from the time of application.
Considering cosmetic injections, microblading, microneedling or laser hair removal? Try Emla numbing cream – a trusted brand for reducing the pain of needle and laser procedures.
The strongest lidocaine cream at the highest percentage available on the market over-the-counter is lidocaine 5% by Curist. Strengths above 5% require a doctor visit and prescription.
Given the efficacy and safety, the bupivacaine group is better than the lidocaine group in dental operations that take a relatively long time, especially in endodontic treatments or where there is a need for postoperative pain management.
Tattoo Tip: To make the effects EXTRA concentrated, apply a thick layer to skin, wrap with plastic wrap for max absorption and let it sit 45 minutes to 1 hour before your session to help numb pain receptors before the artist starts.
