When an object is dyed to be translucent, it allows more light to pass through, reflecting off the objects behind the surface and allowing them to reflect their own color wavelengths, increasing their visibility.
Colours and objects that allow all light to pass through are called transparent. Colours and objects that allow some light to pass through are called translucent. Colours and objects that don't allow any light to pass through are called opaque.
Translucent colors tend to be between opaque and transparent colors. Transparent colors tend to “show-through” the surface below. Opaque colors can be made translucent by the addition of a clear medium such as Nova Color #204 Matte Medium, #205 Matte Varnish or #206 Gloss Medium & Varnish.
The opacity, or hiding strength, of a paint describes how it interacts with light. Opaque paints are more reflective (not to be confused with “shiny”). They cover and hide what's under them. Transparent (or translucent) paints allow more light to pass through them. They are 'see through'.
Transparent colors will allow a light source to pass through them.
When we say something is clear, we are referring to its transparency or lack of opacity. In simple terms, it means that light can pass through it easily without any distortion.
If the white acrylic is more diluted with water, then it will be even more translucent and you'll need to use more layers. To increase the opacity of your white acrylic paint, try using it straight from the tube, with minimal (or no) water added.
“The (object) is opaque--we see light on its surface, but we can't see through it. The (object) is transparent-- we can see light shining through it and what's on the other side of it. The (object) is translucent--we can see light shining through it, but we can't see clearly what's on the other side of it.”
Despite being considered a superhero and an actor, Translucent was a pervert who used his powers to peep on women in bathrooms, showers, and sorority houses. He would come into conflict with the Boys, which resulted in his demise by their newest member, Hughie Campbell.
Pigments that are more translucent in nature are: permanent rose, permanent crimson, alizarin crimson, dioxazine blue, ultramarine, pthalo blue, Prussian blue, viridian green, terre verte, sap green, burnt sienna, raw sienna and raw umber.
In case you didn't know, translucent powder doesn't have any color and instead has a white formula that applies invisibly.
A good way to think of this is opaque paint is not see through and translucent/transparent paint is see through. In the photo you can see the blue paint peeking through underneath the zinc white, but the titanium white hides all of the blue paint underneath it.
Translucent means you can partially see through it. Much light still passes through, but your vision is obscured in some way. With translucent glass films, typically one can see general shapes but not observe any details. Translucent films are commonly referred to as frosted films.
Paint, mica powder, alcohol ink, chalk pastels, glitter, foils, and more can be added to the top of Premo Translucent to impart some color or pizazz to your pieces.

Superhuman Senses: While Translucent can become practically invisible to the naked eye, those with other enhanced physical senses, such as Queen Maeve, can easily detect his presence, despite him being very good at stealth.
Some examples of translucent objects include frosted glass, quartz, sheer curtains, stained glass, some gemstones, and certain crystals. Translucent materials will allow a person to focus on the light passing through and not the objects.
Examples of transparent colours: all the Quinacridones and Phthalo colours, Permanent Rose, Gamboge and Indian Yellows, Perylenes and most blacks. Examples of opaque colours: all the Cadmiums, Cerulean Blue, Naples Yellow and all whites.
However, paint doesn't last forever. The contents can begin to dry, the ingredients can separate, and the paint can become chunky and sour-smelling. Rust and corrosion on the can are signs that the paint is no longer good. Similarly, mold or mildew growth inside the paint can indicate it's time to toss it.
Translucent white acrylic has 71% light transmission. You can see dark shadows through it when held up to the light. Industry color code 2067.

I don't know what brand you use, but if your paints appear translucent on the canvas, it may be due to the paint having more filler and less pigment. The exact ratio of pigment to filler can vary from brand to brand, but in general the Artist Quality paints will have more pigment than the Student Quality paints.
Optical Properties
Clear & Transparent: Think regular glass or acrylic. They allow light through without scattering, giving a crisp view. For instance, clear glass windows offer an unobstructed view outside. Translucent: Like frosted glass or wax paper, they let light through but scatter it, causing a blurred view.
