Too much sun exposure: Spending too much time under direct sunlight without proper protection can cause lips to thin. UV rays from the sun can cause the collagen in your lips to break down. Smoking: Nicotine from cigarettes can decrease the amount of oxygen being delivered to the lip tissues, causing thinning.
“Staying hydrated and promoting the production of collagen by drinking [plenty of] of water, getting eight hours of sleep, taking a probiotic, taking a multivitamin, and using an SPF in your lip products when outside will help [keep your lips looking full],” Patel says.
As you age, your body's production of collagen starts to slow down, which leads to sagging and reduction of volume in areas of your face, like your cheeks and your lips. Hyaluronic acid production also slows down.
Fortunately for your thinning lips, there are dermal fillers available that can pump them back up. The two primary products we offer, Juvéderm® and Restylane®, both use hyaluronic acid as the active ingredient.
Apply a non-irritating lip balm (or lip moisturizer) several times a day and before bed. If your lips are very dry and cracked, try a thick ointment, such as white petroleum jelly. Ointment seals in water longer than waxes or oils. Slather on a non-irritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors.
Whereas the rest of the face may not show signs of getting older until patients reach their late 20s to 30s, lips can begin to lose important volume starting in the late teens. As the process continues and the mouth loses collagen, the lips can begin to flatten out and appear much thinner in just a few short years.
The reason lips thin out and loses their natural fullness is due to a gradual depletion of collagen and thinning of the lip muscles. As you may or may not know, collagen and elastin are natural proteins that our bodies produce to provide skin health, plumpness, strength, and elasticity.
Apply wrinkle-reducing lip products.
After exfoliating your lips, coat them in a thick layer of a hydrating efficacious lip balm or a serum with anti-aging benefits to lock in moisture plus fill lines and boost fullness with treatment ingredients. “Look for hyaluronic acid, peptides and fatty acids like ceramides,” Dr.
Collagen levels decrease with age and, unfortunately, there's no way to prevent this. The good news is that there are several cosmetic treatments that can rebuild or restore collagen.
(Tip: Type I collagen is considered the best for the skin and lips.)
A diet full of protein-rich foods, whether from plant or animal sources, can help supply these critical amino acids. Other nutrients that aid the process of collagen production include zinc, vitamin C, and copper. So, fruits and vegetables high in vitamins and minerals are also a friend to supple skin.
An effective way to restore volume to your lips and smooth the lines around the mouth (including smile and marionette lines), dermal fillers smooth wrinkles, soften creases, and improve facial contours by acting like your body's own naturally occurring hyaluronic acid.
One alternative to temporary lip fillers for lip augmentation is to use implants, which is a more permanent option. During your lip consultation, your doctor will determine what size lip implant would be best. The Permalip implant insertion is an in-office procedure.
As we age, the decreased production of new collagen and elastin molecules make lips appear thinner. They lose the vital subdermal structure needed to remain full and plump. Lack of moisture is another cause for premature thinning of lips. The skin on the lips is different from other areas of the body.
Severely chapped lips may take longer to heal, but the average time is two to three weeks to recover completely. If you treat chapped lips as soon as you notice a problem, your lips will heal much faster and you can avoid potential complications like infection.
B vitamins
Chapped lips are a common symptom of deficiencies, especially in folate (vitamin B9), riboflavin (vitamin B2), and vitamins B6 and B12 ( 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ).
What does it look like? Solar cheilitis predominantly affects the lower lip because it tends to be more prominent. The homogenous pink color of the healthy lip (Figure A) is replaced with non-homogenous white/gray, pink, red, or brown areas and the normally sharp vermillion/skin border becomes less distinct (Figure B).
In a bowl add 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon powder and a tablespoon of sugar. Mix well and massage this on your lips for about 5-10 minutes, this will increase blood flow to the lips and make them appear fuller. It will also remove flaky skin and hydrate your lips to make them soft and smooth.
