"Salicylic acid is an excellent comedolytic, or pore-clearing, ingredient because it exfoliates the stratum corner (the surface of the skin) and penetrates into pores to remove sebum."
A sebum plug occurs when excess sebum forms in a follicle and becomes hardened, causing forms of acne and breakouts. To clear out this follicle there are a few options, including gently exfoliating the skin and developing a consistent skincare routine.
Sebaceous filaments are a normal part of your skin, which means you cannot get rid of them. Sebaceous filaments can never be completely removed. If they are extracted, they return quickly, usually within 30 days or less for those with very oily skin.
Over-the-counter medications, creams, and face washes that contain retinol may help clear clogged sebaceous glands. Some people may find that regularly washing the skin with a cleanser containing salicylic acid can help dry-oily skin and prevent clogged glands.
Do: Exfoliate.
According to Ross, exfoliating regularly is perhaps the best way to treat sebum plugs and keep them from popping up. Since sebum plugs are caused by oil, your best bet will be BHAs.
Use a Cleanser with Salicylic Acid.
Remove excess impurities and sebum with a charcoal acne cleanser with salicylic acid. Salicylic acid helps dissolve the dead skin cells and oils clogging pores that might lead to large sebaceous filaments.

Usually you can spot a blackhead easy enough, sebum plugs are a little trickier but if you grab a magnifying glass you can see them no problem. You will notice that although they may look like little black dots from a distance, they are actually more of a white or yellow color.
Are Pore Vacuums Effective at Clearing Pores and Blackheads? In short, yes. “Pore vacuums certainly can be an effective tool in helping to regularly clear pore congestion, however they're not essential component to a skincare routine,” says Dr. Reszko.

Vitamin B5
According to Dr. Dach, “Vitamin B5 works by reducing the oil production of the sebaceous glands.” Dach also recommends using L-Carnitine in conjunction with pantothenic acid, which can boost its effects.
Zinc stops the over-production of oily sebum, and it also lowers the impact of DHT androgen hormones that induce sebum in response to inflammation and stress.
While coffee doesn't cause acne, some studies suggest it can make it worse. Caffeine makes you feel alert and awake but also leads to a heightened stress response in the body. Stress hormones, such as cortisol, may increase the amount of oil produced by your sebaceous glands, meaning you can be more prone to breakouts.
Milia are tiny, dome-shaped bumps on the skin that contain dead skin cells trapped in small pockets near the skin's surface. In some cases, milia are actually nicknamed “baby acne” or “Epstein pearls" due to their appearance.
Keratin plugs don't usually require medical treatment. However, it's understandable to want to get rid of them for aesthetic reasons, especially if they're located in a visible area of your body.
