This process is often known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). Muscle soreness is related to muscle damage, which can promote, but is not required for, muscle growth. In a nutshell, unless your goal is to feel sore, then you don't need to be sore after every workout.
If you're consistently not sore, that could indicate that you're not pushing yourself enough. When you exhaust your muscles, you'll see better results. To increase the challenge, up the amount of weight you lift or the number of reps you perform. The last few reps should be challenging to do with correct form.
As your body gets stronger, and your muscles adapt to the new type of movement, you won't feel the soreness afterwards. As you progress through the physical change, the DOMS will reduce and, usually within a dozen or so workouts, you'll stop feeling it altogether.
Soreness is considered normal if it occurs between 24-72 hours after a workout, and if it does not prevent you from completing normal daily activities. A lot of very advanced athletes and bodybuilders are almost never sore from training. Their body is so used to handling training that they very rarely traumatize their muscles enough to cause the stress response that will lead to debilitating soreness.

While seeing results from working out heavily depends on the person and their current level of fitness, "My [clients] generally see initial changes within four to six weeks, and actual results within eight to 12 weeks," Wilson explains.
Within three to six months, an individual can see a 25 to 100% improvement in their muscular fitness – provided a regular resistance program is followed. Most of the early gains in strength are the result of the neuromuscular connections learning how to produce movement.
“At 6 to 8 weeks, you can definitely notice some changes,” said Logie, “and in 3 to 4 months you can do a pretty good overhaul to your health and fitness.” Strength-specific results take about the same amount of time.
This is because your body can begin to get used to that style of training. That means there might be fewer micro tears, which can result in less muscle soreness after working out and a faster recovery. In other words, this is a sign that your body is adapting and changing, which is a good thing!

Delayed onset muscle soreness is common after exercise and usually means your muscles are getting stronger.
Soreness following a workout is not an indicator of a good workout, nor is the absence of soreness an indicator of a poor workout. Feeling sore is an indicator of tiny microscopic tears in the muscle resulting in inflammation, often referred to as DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness).
They're a great choice if you're working out regularly because they provide a quick source of energy, as well as some essential vitamins and minerals. It's also thought that eating bananas can help to reduce exercise-related muscle cramps and soreness, due to their high potassium content.
Your muscles are weaker when healing from DOMS, so working through the pain won't earn you any strength gains, and may delay healing. The use of lighter weights, stretching, and massage have also been shown to be of little help.

Your muscles are at their strongest when you're 25, although for the next 10 or 15 years they stay almost as hefty - and this is one of the traits that can be most easily improved, thanks to resistance exercise.
