“After moisturizing, skin should be exactly the same color as it was before you put it on, perhaps a little brighter. Any yellowing, redness, or blotching means it's not happy.”
When too much product is applied it can't fully absorb into the skin and will form a sticky layer. If you don't allow previous products to fully absorb before applying the next step this can result in a layer stuck on the top of the skin.
Skincare products are meant to hydrate and moisturise your skin, not leave it feeling greasy or sticky. But if that's how your skin feels after applying your skincare products, then there's definitely something wrong. Your skin should be able to absorb the product within five minutes of application.
Obviously, the best results of a good skincare routine leave your skin feeling healthy both inside and out. Goldenberg's go-to recommendation for timing between serums and moisturizers is about one minute. This wait has the same reasoning: Sixty seconds — give or take — gives each product a moment to delve into your pores.

If a product used to make your skin silky but is now giving you a tacky or sticky feel, it could be expired. According to Worden, when a product is expired, has been contaminated or has had too much sun exposure, a major sign is a change in texture.
