“You can oil when your hair is damp or dry, but your hair and scalp have to be clean, or the oil won't have a chance to be absorbed,” says Dr Gupta. For heavier oils like coconut oil, applying it on dry hair is best, as the larger molecules may not penetrate the shaft of wet hair as well it can dry hair.
It is always recommended to apply oil when your hair is dry. The larger molecules of oils may not be able to penetrate your scalp and hair tissues in damp conditions. Also, Ayurveda recommends applying warm oil as it increases the penetration capacity of oil.
Don't leave the oil in your hair overnight
She says: “Dust gets collected in your hair if you keep oil overnight which can block the hair follicles and lead to scalp infections. Keeping the oil on for 30 minutes is more than enough.”
Oil your hair no more than 1 to 2 times a week. Leave it on for approximately an hour or two but you don't need to leave it on longer than that. When you leave oil on too long you run the risk of zits because oil will run down onto your skin and you also don't add any real benefit by leaving it on longer.
You should never comb your hair immediately after applying oil. You see, hair is more fragile after oiling and your scalp is a lot more relaxed. Combing your hair roughly can cause hair breakage and loss. If you do want to comb your locks, start from the tips and gently make your way to the top.
Absolutely. Applying the oil while the hair is wet will nourish and protect it from frizz and pollution as it dries into a subtly shiny version of its natural texture. Once the hair is dry, you may pump a touch more oil into your palm, rub it between your hands and smooth it over your lengths and ends.
Leaving oil on your hair everyday for too long can cause product build-up on your scalp. It may also clog your pores, attract dirt and accumulate dandruff. Oiling your hair everyday also means that you have to wash it with shampoo everyday. This is not ideal to achieve healthy, lustrous and soft hair.
Seal in your moisture
The practice of using oils after washing your hair is called sealing; this reduces the rate of moisture depletion. People will use oil as a part of their LOC method to prevent dryness, reduce frizz, and stave off wash day. You can use a pure oil or create your own blend.
But in our endeavor to moisturize our hair with warm oil, we sometimes heat the oil a little too much and end up putting in hot oil. This can cause inflammation of your hair follicles and makes up to be one of the top hairfall reasons.
Wash it off with warm water. Applying a mix of your regular shampoo or lemon water and aloe vera gel also removes coconut oil. You may leave the mixture on for a few minutes before washing it off. The acidity in lemon is said to remove grease and coconut oil from your hair.
It's Personal. “You can apply oil on hair before every wash and keep it on for as long as you want,” Chabbi advises. “A good shampoo will remove the oil but keep the hair's elasticity and shine. Even when the oil has been washed out, it will help to avoid split ends and frizzy texture.”
In general, it is not recommended to leave oil on for more than 6-8 hours, as that might make things tricky. The oil can attract a lot of dirt, dust, grime and get them to stick to your hair! So, it will take a lot more effort to wash your hair with all this added stuff to wash off.
The dermatologist stated that hair oil promotes hair growth is a pure myth. Oils may nourish your hair but they cannot initiate hair growth. So, if at all, you think that hair oils stop hair fall and promote hair growth, you are wrong. - Be it coconut oil or almond oil or onion oil, all oils are good conditioners.
If your hair is thin or gets greasy easily, you can skip the scalp so the oil doesn't weigh your hair down. Allow the coconut oil to sit on your hair for 20 to 30 minutes after application. If your hair is very dry or porous, you can leave it on longer; some people like to use it as an overnight treatment.
Coconut oil will make any conditioner even more conditioning. After saturating your hair with conditioner, add a layer of coconut oil on top. The oil is occlusive, so it will trap the the conditioner's hydrating ingredients within your hair, allowing them to penetrate the shaft longer and more effectively.
For best results, some haircare experts suggest using coconut oil about two to three times a week.

If a person's hair is oilier, lighter oils, such as grapeseed, apricot kernel, or almond oil may be preferable. Mix 2 or 3 drops of the essential oils into a tablespoon of carrier oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated and must be diluted. Massage the mixture into the scalp vigorously for 2 to 3 minutes.
If you leave the oil for a long time, it can clog the pores and cut off the oxygen reaching the hair leading to damaged hair, boils on the scalp, and eventually hair fall. Also, oiling is not suitable for people who are suffering from dandruff or have a naturally oily scalp.
