If dark spots, clogged pores and hyperpigmentation are more your concern then microdermabrasion is the way to go for you. If you like your skin or feel like dryness is more your issue, then dermaplaning is your key to success.
However, aestheticians often recommend dermaplaning combined with microdermabrasion. In this case, because it is less aggressive, dermaplaning must be done first, and microdermabrasion can follow.
Dr. Phuah recommends appointments every two weeks or so for microdermabrasion and monthly for dermaplaning. Whether you want to remove peach fuzz and dead cells with dermaplaning or try the more intense microdermabrasion, both treatments exfoliate your skin for a more beautiful, glowing complexion.
For the smoothest skin ever, try our new combination treatment of Dermaplaning and Microdermabrasion. Two of our patients' favorite procedures, Dermaplaning and DermaSweep® microdermabrasion, were always enjoyed separately. We decided to offer them together as one treatment, to give the best of both worlds.
The downsides of dermaplaning
There are a range of common side effects, including breakouts, risk of infection, redness or discoloration, and irritation. The procedure can be costly. The procedure only affects the top layers of your skin, so it isn't as effective as more intensive exfoliation treatments.
It's common to feel a little stubble as your hair starts growing back in after dermaplaning. This doesn't mean that your hair is thicker or more coarse. It has to do with the way each hair was cut straight across. The hair feels different to you, but it's the exact same texture and color as it was before dermaplaning.
After a facial, you'll feel exfoliated and refreshed, with softer skin and improved circulation. With microdermabrasion, those results will last longer, due to the fact that you receive a deeper exfoliation.
So microdermabrasion is more than exfoliation? Exactly! Being a mechanical form of exfoliation, the results are far superior, leaving your skin with a 'clean and fresh' sparkling tone due to the regeneration of the epidermal cell structure.
While this process does remove dead skin cells, it does not remove the vellus (peach fuzz) hairs, and there is a lot less control - making it an inappropriate treatment for many skin types.
Dermaplaning facial is a type of physical exfoliation and peels are a type of chemical exfoliation. This distinction separates them as exfoliators, as well as how they are performed and what goes on during each treatment.
Can microdermabrasion make skin worse? It may appear that microdermabrasion has made your skin worse in the treated area to begin with as your skin adjusts to the changes. Microdermabrasion can sometimes cause breakouts as the bacteria and dirt is drawn from your skin to leave you with brighter, younger looking skin.
Microdermabrasion is a wonderful treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, and rough skin texture, but unfortunately it is not the most effective treatment for removing freckles or blackheads.
However, generally speaking, ideal candidates for the procedure are those looking to get rid of age spots, uneven discoloration, sun damage, minor acne scars, shallow wrinkles and lines, clogged pores, and skin texture issues.
Dermaplaning is one of the most effective ways to achieve brighter, younger-looking skin that's free of blackheads. Treatment is also highly effective in reducing the appearance of acne scars, hyperpigmentation, and fine lines.
Shrink enlarged pores and blackheads
Microdermabrasion isn't recommended if you have an active breakout of acne or irritated skin, which includes blackheads. But if you get blackheads often, the treatment may be a way to shrink your pores.
Also, since the treatment is so minimally invasive, it might not help people with deep creases and lines and more significant signs of aging. If you're just beginning to show signs of aging or have some dark spots or acne scars that you want to banish, microdermabrasion might be the right choice for you.
Microdermabrasion treatment helps remove ageing skin cells and damaged skin layers to reveal fresher, younger looking skin and a dazzling complexion. The anti-ageing microdermabrasion procedure is simple and effective, and it can rejuvenate your ageing skin's appearance in a short time with little or no discomfort.
While microdermabrasion can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as age spots, it can't tighten sagging skin or treat deep wrinkles. Those issues are in the domain of facial cosmetic surgery treatment.
Remember, you won't get all of the benefits of microdermabrasion with just one treatment. Although your skin will likely feel softer after the first treatment, you'll need several treatments to actually see improvement.
On average, it takes between six to twelve sessions for a person to see drastic results from microdermabrasion. Some people opt to get these treatments every single week for their first three sessions.
As an at-home option, you can shave your upper lip hair (a.k.a dermaplaning), which removes the hair and gently exfoliates the skin for a smooth-looking complexion. If you're looking for a more permanent solution, laser hair removal is your best bet.
Without the removal of vellus hair, buildup can occur causing oil and grime to clog pores. This may contribute to skin breakouts and dull or flaky skin. By removing the top layer of skin, aka the stratum corneum, we are exfoliating your skin and boosting skin growth and healthy cell metabolism.
Dermaplaning successfully exfoliates the skin and removes peach fuzz from the face. The procedure does not reach down to the follicles, so the hair will grow back.
