Blackheads are small, dark lesions that appear on the skin, often on the face and neck. They are a feature of mild acne, but they can appear without other signs of acne being present. They contain an oxidized version of melanin, the dark pigment made by cells in the skin.
When you have blackheads, these large pores become clogged with a substance known as sebum. A chemical reaction with the sebum occurs under your skin. Melanin is oxidized and turns the clogged pores a black color.
Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil. This oil, called sebum, helps keep your skin soft. Dead skin cells and oils collect in the opening to the skin follicle, producing a bump called a comedo. If the skin over the bump stays closed, the bump is called a whitehead.
But when the top remains open, a blackhead forms. A lot of people think that blackheads are dark because that's the color of the dirt in the pore. The truth is, blackheads are black or dark gray because the oil and dead skin that clog the pore “ oxidize ” (turn black) when they come into contact with air.
Comedones, more commonly known as blackheads, are small, dark spots on your skin caused by a clogged pore. Contrary to common belief, the black or dark color they have isn't from dirt — it is an oxidation of the dead skin cells that cause the clog. The oxidized skin cells then appear dark in color.
It can be very tempting — and satisfying — to squeeze out or pop blackheads. However, squeezing out blackheads can create several problems: You may not remove the entire blackhead. You may even push the blackhead further into your skin, which can cause painful irritation.
They happen when a mixture of dead skin cells and oil (sebum) gets trapped in your pores. While they aren't prone to infection, blackheads can become infected if you pick at them. Picking at a blackhead can break down the wall surrounding the affected pore, allowing bacteria to enter.
A blackhead is a blockage or plug at the top of a pore. The plug prevents oil from escaping through the pore. A sebaceous filament is a thin, hair-like structure that lines the inside of the pore and helps sebum travel to the skin's surface.
"They're clogged pores or hair follicles that collect sebum (the natural oil that the glands on our face make), dirt, skin cells, and bacteria," she said. "They are more likely to form on the nose because the nose has lots of glands." Sarkar noted that not every black spot on your nose is a blackhead, though.
The skin in this area contains more oil glands than other parts of your face and body, which is one of the main factors why blackheads often pop up on your nose. Each pore has a hair follicle and sebaceous gland, which produces sebum that naturally moisturizes the skin.
The stuff you squeeze out of them is pus, which contains dead white blood cells.
To begin, place a warm, damp cloth over the blackhead for several minutes to help open the pore and make the plug easier to remove. Then, place the extractor loop around the blackhead. Add pressure until the buildup is released – but never try to force the contents as this can damage the skin.
A sebum plug is an infrequently used term for acne. These plugs occur when sebum (oil) from your sebaceous glands become trapped in your hair follicles. Dead skin cells and then inflammation creates acne lesions. Sebum plugs may come in the form of inflammatory acne, such as pustules and papules.
A sebum plug can look like a tiny bump under the surface of the skin or it may stick out through the skin like a grain of sand. When a sebum plug forms, bacteria that normally lives harmlessly on the surface of your skin can start to grow within the follicle. Inflammation follows, causing a breakout.
Sebum consists mainly of oil which is excreted by a network of tiny glands all over the body. Sometimes the sebum becomes trapped which can result in skin problems such as acne and cysts. Sebum can develop a `cheesy ` smell which is why some people have `smelly` feet.
The technical term for an acne seed is a microcomedone. A microcomedone is a cluster of mostly dead skin cells that might be mixed with oil and comedogenic ingredients from pore-clogging products. It's called a micro-comedone because when it first forms, it is microscopic so it's invisible to the naked eye.
Are Pore Vacuums Effective at Clearing Pores and Blackheads? “Pore vacuums certainly can be an effective tool in helping to regularly clear pore congestion, however they're not essential component to a skincare routine,” says Dr. Reszko.
While you might not be able to rid your skin of pores, it's true that nose strips can temporarily make pores look smaller. By removing blackheads, the strips clear out the black- or brown-colored blockage. This can make pores appear as if they're smaller or gone.
Don't squeeze the pores on your nose
It's tempting to squeeze your pores. While it may get rid of the darker dots short term, it can also: damage skin tissue. enlarge the pores.
No, blackheads aren't made of worms, but the congealed dead skin cells and sebum that actually are found in the plugged follicles certainly resembles the creatures.
Sebaceous filaments may look a little like blackheads, but they differ in some important ways. Sebaceous filaments are natural, healthy features that help move sebum to the skin's surface for moisturizing. Blackheads form when too much sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria clog a pore.

After you remove a blackhead, your pore will appear smaller. That's because the dirt and oil have been removed. Swipe a toner, such as witch hazel, over the area to kill any bacteria you may have spread and to condition your pores. You may want to avoid directly touching the area while your skin heals.
