Introduction: Waterfall Braid
This technique isn't particularly hard, but it can be arm-tiring and takes a bit of practice to get an even-looking result. Keep at it!
A pulled-through braid adds another dimension of texture to a basic half-up waterfall. This braid holds your hair back—just like a low ponytail—without the need of an elastic. This cascading waterfall braid eventually falls into a rumpled side braid.
Milk Maid Braids are a protective style that are not only super cute; you can dress them up or wear them down in a more casual and relaxed way. What's more convenient is they are easy to maintain and keep neat when you tie them down with a scarf over night.
Fishtail braid: A fishtail braid resembles a French braid in its smoothly woven appearance, but divides the hair into only two sections instead of three. A small piece of each section is passed over to the other section over and over to form the braid. This style was called the "Grecian braid" in the 19th century.
Mermaid braids are a protective style achieved by braiding hair. They allow the bottom of the braid to flow into loose or curled ends, creating an effortless, ethereal look. The look has been made even more popular by celebrities like Halle Bailey, Tia Mowry, Lisa Bonet and even Béyonce.
Instead of creating a knot at the root like with traditional box braids, knotless braids are created using a feed-in braid technique. As a result, there's less tension on the scalp, which can help minimize the risk of hair breakage (and is especially great for those with thin or fine hair).
Woven Braids
These can be some of the most difficult braids to achieve as they sometimes require a second set of hands and a whole lot of patience.
If you are already comfortable braiding 7-loop square braids, this beautiful 7-loop “Spanish” braid (known from a few cryptic 17th C. English manuscripts) might be fun to try next. It has twice as many loop transfers as a square braid – done a little differently than you might expect!
Poetic Justice Braids (aka Janet Jackson Braids) Poetic justice braids are braids like Janet Jackson's famous jumbo braided hairstyle in the movie Poetic Justice. Before being known as poetic justice braids, people used to refer to this popular style of braids as box braids.
The Delta Braid originates from this region and is a rare form of art still practiced today. This beautiful form of appliqué is ribbons of geometric patterns made from layers of multi-coloured bias tape and seam bindings.
A byproduct of the mermaid hair trend, unicorn braids offer naturals a splashy, playful edge - sans bleach. Kinks and curls are transformed with spools of colorful hair installed via the cornrow, three-strand and/or crochet method.
During the ceremony, the couple braided three cords together as a symbol of their new marriage. One cord for the bride, one for the groom, and the third was symbolic of God.
A Dutch braid is very similar to a French braid hairstyle, with the minor tweak that you are crossing the side sections of hair underneath the middle strand each time as opposed to over it. It creates a more 3-D effect, with the braid displayed on top of the hairstyle.
the french braid comes in many variations also. It's the iconic braid of the Vikings. Most people go with french braids and an undercut, but you can actually still achieve a unique and masculine appearance with french braids on the sides as well.
