Close behind the viral Italian bob and midi bob haircuts in terms of popularity, the collarbone bob is the mid-length chop that lets you straddle both short and long hair. Cut around clavicle length, the style has been seen recently on Florence Pugh, Barbie Ferreira and Bridgerton actor Simone Ashley.
“It starts with a soft fringe or curtain bangs with gradual layers that end in a bob, instead of the classic blunt version,” says Rubenstein. The bottleneck nickname refers to only the fringe itself since they create a similar silhouette to a bottle's neck when framing the face.
The lob is cut just above the shoulders, at shoulder level or just below. In the 1920s, many women were choosing to cut their hair into the bob. Towards the end of the decade, and the start of the Great Depression, a more womanly look was in style, over the flat-chested boyish fashions of the flapper era.
Trend Breakdown: What Is A “Bottleneck” Bob? It's exactly what it sounds like. Picture a retro-esque Coca Cola bottle—the shape of the bob starts with a pinched fringe that transitions into blunt layers through the ends.
Shattered Bob
This innovative look involves 'shattering' the ends of your hair to create a choppy, textured finish.
As celebrity and editorial hairstylist Neil Moodie explains: “A wolf haircut is a mix of the shag haircut and a mullet, but generally created on longer hair. It has shorter choppy layers on the top and longer choppy layers around the sides and back.”
Pixie Bob
The pixie cut is one of the most popular short hairstyles for women because it is effortlessly chic. The style is defined by short hair on the back and sides and longer bangs.
What is the difference between the French bob and a regular bob? Aside from the fact that all the stylish French girls have one? The only difference namely is how the style is cut, the French bob usually involves a shorter chin length and the addition of blunt bangs.
“A bob is one of those styles that can make some people look younger—if done right. But when it's done incorrectly or done on the wrong face, it can make you look older.”
Since lobs are cut right below your collarbone, they still allow you to have some length (aka you can still put your hair into a ponytail). Plus, your hair will be long again in no time if you choose to grow it back out, making the decision to go shorter less scary than you think, says Atkin.
– Medium hair has the length that goes from the shoulder to the armpit, which is about 12-18 inches for straight strands and up to 24 inches for curly ones. – Long is any hair that is beyond this length. Different hair lengths are often associated with different lifestyles.
Blow dry straight and go through section by section point cutting and shattering the ends of the hair; you have to be carful with frizzy and curly hair as this can create more frizz by destroying the curl so your stylist should discuss this with you depending on your hair texture.
"Professionally known as the 'box bob', the boyfriend bob is a sharp, blunt-cut bob, sitting on (or just below) jaw length," Neil Moodie, editorial hairstylist and founder of Neil Moodie Studio in Spitalfields, told me recently when I picked his brains on all things hair trends.
The inverted bob is a bob with layers stacked at the back that gradually get longer in the front. The layers curve along the shape of your head. It is also called the gradual bob and stacked bob. Celebrity stylist Khamis Maiouf says, “In this style, a smooth transition from long to short is important.
Bobs remain big news and will continue to dominate through 2022. “The bob is a classic,” explains top hairstylist James Earnshaw, and there's lots of different ways to wear it.
"Oval face shapes are the most universal for bobs," notes Buckett. "You can do anything from blunt to short or long, and it can be done on any hair type." Bangs, layers, curls, angles—you name it.
Choppy Bob is a fancy way of saying: medium-long hair, don't care. It's a haircut with a laid-back attitude. Unlike other Bobs, the hair isn't cut to one length, but in layers. The great thing about the trendy Choppy Bob: This layered cut is sexy, uncomplicated and easy to handle.
What is the difference between a layered bob and a stacked bob? Layered and stacked bobs are both characterized by one thing: Lots of layers. A stacked bob, however, features angled layers that create a graduated, sharper look. A layered bob is a straight cut with long, short, or choppy layers.
Layered bob haircuts are great for thick hair because they help remove bulk and density. The more layers you add, the more it will help your thick hair lay better. If you are looking for a super short and unique hairstyle, try a high-contrast wedge bob. The transition from short to long gives a distinctive look.
Bobs are still very much in vogue, and Syd Hayes predicts that the “box” style will be one of the most popular for 2023. “It's an extremely classic Vidal Sassoon bob,” says Hayes. “A sharp shape, that's striking—less about the layers and more about straight lines and angles.” It's the epitome of a power haircut.
The jellyfish haircut sports disconnected layers that resemble a short bob with longer layers underneath. If the name is any giveaway, it truly resembles the round body and longer, billowy tentacles of a jellyfish.
Similar to a mullet, the style features more body and volume at the crown of the head (the head of the octopus) and then longer, thinner, shag-like layers from the mid-shaft to ends (the tentacles). Though the octopus haircut is inspired by both the mullet and shag, it is neither.
A butterfly haircut combines short layers with long layers to give your hair dimension, movement and body. The short, wispy layers hit around the chin to frame your face, highlight your features and even contour a round face shape.
