Does coconut oil have any negative effects on hair? Coconut oil is generally considered safe to apply to your skin and hair ( 13 ). However, using too much could cause a buildup of oil on your hair and scalp. This could make your hair greasy and dull, especially if you have very fine hair.
If you're targeting coconut oil for hair growth, leaving it overnight can be beneficial. However, if you don't have enough time, then you can leave it on for about an hour or two, and wash it off after some time.
Although coconut oil can also be bad for hair when you leave unrefined oil on the roots and scalp for too long – if it's absorbed into the scalp, hair growth can slow down, and your hair will be getting greasy much faster.
Coconut oil can cause protein buildup for these hair types, blocking your hair from much-needed moisture which makes your hair even drier, stiffer, and less elastic. And less elasticity means more breakage when combing or styling.
Smooth coconut oil onto hair and comb it through dry hair. Leave it on for at 15 to 30 minutes to let it absorb. Thoroughly wash hair with a great shampoo (you may need to shampoo twice to remove all of the oil) and conditioning as usual.
You can leave coconut oil on your hair for a minimum of 30 minutes. For maximum benefits, you may leave it overnight. Washing it off too early may not let the hair and scalp soak its benefits, and keeping it on for days may attract dirt and cause buildup and hair fall.
Coconut oil can offer your hair a more intense treatment the longer it is left in (within reason – don't go leaving coconut oil in your hair for days!) especially if you're looking to hydrate your hair. You see, coconut oil contains what are known as medium chain fatty acids as well as plenty of amino acids.
Things You Should Know
Put coconut oil in your hair to prevent water damage, prevent tearing, and restore strength and shine. Leave the oil in your hair for up to 8 hours.
“Saturated fats, often found in meat and dairy products as well as coconut oil, can increase LDL levels in your blood,” says Dr. Russell. “This in turn increases your risk of heart disease, peripheral artery disease and stroke.” Eating foods that contain coconut oil can increase your risk for heart problems.
"The reason some people experience dryness with coconut oil — especially when using it alone as a treatment — is that it can penetrate the hair cuticle, taking up space within the strands," says cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson.
If coconut oil or any oil is not washed off it will start smelling rancid. It will attract dust and dirt, also block your pores. On hair, if you are in a hot climatic region, it will make your hair oily and heavy. In cold climate it will harden and hair will feel like straw.
In general, it is not recommended to leave oil on for more than 6-8 hours, as that might make things tricky. The oil can attract a lot of dirt, dust, grime and get them to stick to your hair!
stimulates hair growth
Coconut oil is a natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker, and faster. The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.
Leaving your oil on your hair for more than one day is a bad idea. Even one day is not recommended since it can cause the oil to form a layer on your scalp, clogging your pores, accumulating dandruff and attracting dirt.
Avoid leaving oil in overnight
The longer, the better — that may be true for some hair treatments but not for hair oiling as the oil can block your hair follicles. Unless an ayurvedic doctor or expert has asked you to leave a medicated oil overnight, wash out the oil within 3-4 hours.
It can be used as a cooking oil in the kitchen, to treat damaged hair, and even as a moisturizer for the skin on your body; however, I do not recommend using coconut oil on your face. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic, which means it clogs the pores on your face.
However one study found coconut oil to be comedogenic, which means that it clogs pores. It may not be the best choice for people with darker skin or oily, acne-prone skin.
The short answer is HECK YES! You can most definitely overeat coconut oil.
“You can oil when your hair is damp or dry, but your hair and scalp have to be clean, or the oil won't have a chance to be absorbed,” says Dr Gupta. For heavier oils like coconut oil, applying it on dry hair is best, as the larger molecules may not penetrate the shaft of wet hair as well it can dry hair.
Other purported benefits
Eating coconut oil might give you healthier, faster growing hair. You might notice a difference especially if you aren't getting enough natural fats and other nutrients in your diet. Using coconut oil as a hair and scalp mask may also help kill hair lice and lice eggs.
