Symptoms of acne on your skin include: Pimples (pustules): Pus-filled bumps (papules). Papules: Small, discolored bumps, often red to purple or darker than your natural skin tone. Blackheads: Plugged pores with a black top.

Signs of acne-prone skin include a large number of pimples and deeper inflamed lesions across a large area of the skin on the face, back or neck. Acne lesions can be more raised or exist deep under the epidermis, with redness and inflammation present. Acne-prone skin is often more tender to the touch.
Keratosis pilaris causes small, red bumps that can be mistaken for acne. Clues you're not dealing with acne: Unlike pimples, these bumps feel rough and usually appear on dry skin. You'll usually see them on your upper arms and on the front of your thighs. You may notice that family members also have these bumps.
Grade 1 (mild): mostly whiteheads and blackheads, with a few papules and pustules. Grade 2 (moderate, or pustular acne): multiple papules and pustules, mostly on your face. Grade 3 (moderately severe, or nodulocystic acne): numerous papules and pustules, along with occasionally inflamed nodules.
Acne commonly starts during puberty between the ages of 10 and 13 and tends to be worse in people with oily skin. Teenage acne usually lasts for five to 10 years, normally going away during the early 20s. It occurs in both sexes, although teenage boys tend to have the most severe cases.
Hormonal acne causes breakouts. These appear as lesions or bumps on your skin that could become red, inflamed, painful and sore if not treated. Moderate to severe acne and untreated acne can lead to scarring where lesions formed.
What does hormonal acne look like? Whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, cysts and nodules are all common hormonal acne symptoms. Normally, whiteheads and blackheads do not cause pain, inflammation or swelling, but if they do, then they are most likely forming into cysts and pustules.
A telltale sign that you're experiencing a stress breakout is that you'll get several new pimples at once, while hormonal breakouts tend to happen one at a time (unless you've introduced a new product). Even if you aren't usually acne-prone, stressful periods or events can trigger breakouts.
Most pimples go away on their own, but it may take some time. Deep pimples (pimples under your skin with no head that may feel hard to the touch) may take a few weeks to go away, if not longer.
Examples include white bread, corn flakes, puffed rice, potato chips, white potatoes or fries, doughnuts or other pastries, sugary drinks such as milkshakes, and white rice. Findings from small studies suggest that following a low-glycemic diet may reduce the amount of acne you have.

Non-Active Acne
These can be open (blackheads) or closed (whiteheads) and can be flesh-colored, white, or dark. When there are no signs of acne present (pimples or bumps) or is well-controlled, it is in a non-active stage. This is the early stage of acne and is a tricky one since there is no acne present.
Bacterial acne rarely does. Clusters. Fungal acne often appears in clusters of small whiteheads. Bacterial acne is less clustered and more sparse.
Hormonal acne can start in the teenage years and continue in to the 20's and 30's. Hormonal acne may also develop for the first time over the age of 20. Hormonal acne can also develop perimenopause and menopause.
With most prescription acne drugs, you may not see results for four to eight weeks. It can take many months or years for your acne to clear up completely. The treatment regimen your doctor recommends depends on your age, the type and severity of your acne, and what you are willing to commit to.
If you have 20 to 100 whiteheads or blackheads, 15 to 50 inflamed bumps, or 30 to 125 total lesions, your acne is considered moderate.
Genetics play a large role in determining who does and who doesn't get acne. Chances are that if your parents or siblings suffer from acne, you probably have it too. Your genes influence how sensitive your skin is to hormonal and environmental factors.
The four stages of acne (comedones, papules, pustules and cysts) are graded 1 through 4. Exacerbating factors in the etiology of acne include progesterone-containing oral contraceptives, hyperandrogenic states that may manifest as acne, hirsuitism and irregular menses, and oil-based cosmetics.
On a positive note, itchiness can be a sign indicating that the acne is getting better. When acne is healing, the red, pustular skin needs to be replaced with new, healthy skin. During this process, your body exfoliates, or sheds old layers of skin to uncover new layers of skin.
Types of acne
Grade 2 (moderate, or pustular acne): multiple papules and pustules, mostly confined to the face. Grade 3 (moderately severe; nodulocystic acne): numerous papules and pustules; the occasional inflamed nodule; the back and the chest may also be affected.
Sudden acne breakouts can be because of numerous reasons, including hormonal changes or hormonal imbalance, an unhealthy diet including lots of deep fried and junk food, release of cortisol hormones because of excessive stress, excessive production of sebum and much more.
Stress pimples will usually pop up in the oiliest areas of the face, like the forehead, nose and chin. Your T-zone might look greasier and more congested too. Doctors say that if you're getting clusters of pimples all at once, stress can be a factor—hormonal pimples happen one at a time.
