The Good: Patients who experience strange side effects such as having a weird smile or a “Joker” smile after lip injections can rest assured knowing that this is a common side effect, as a result of swelling after the procedure. Wait up to a week before worrying about your weird smile.
Answer: Swelling After Lip Injections
The tenderness and firmness will improve as swelling resolves over the next 2 weeks. You can help reduce the swelling with cold compresses and take Tylenol for the pain. It is best to avoid NSAID's, such as Ibuprofen because they thin the blood increasing and increase swelling.
Most patients won't experience any pain after having dermal fillers. But some people may find they have a little bit of soreness and/or mild bruising at the site of injection. If you do experience any pain, bruising or swelling, you can treat this with an ice pack.
By day 2 the initial swelling will have gone and you will start to see the full effects of the treatment. By this day the bulk of any pain should have gone, the primary swelling from the injections will have subsided.
It might feel uncomfortable but should not be painful. The treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

The filler can take several weeks to soften and settle into your skin. This means that patients won't see the ultimate results of their treatment immediately. Although individual results will vary, many people achieve the full effect within two weeks after receiving their injections.
It is normal for the injection areas to be red and swollen for 1-3 days. It is normal for one side to be slightly fuller than the other-we will see you in 2-4 weeks for a touch up.
IMMEDIATELY AFTER A LIP FILLER PROCEDURE
For most, redness and swelling don't last more than just a few hours after leaving the office. If it has not mostly resolved within three to five days of your injections, please contact your medical provider.
Pain, redness or itchiness at the injection site is also normal, and should be mild. If you experience severe pain, redness or itching, or pain outside of the lip area, see your doctor. Overfilling is a concern for some patients, especially in the first week after treatment when lips are still swollen.
As lips are one of the most sensitive areas of the body it is normal to have tenderness and swelling post injection. However, extreme pain can be a warning sign. When injecting the lips it is possible to inject into or around an artery causing a vascular occlusion, which would cause intense pain.
Usually, the tooth's outer layers — the enamel and cementum — protect the nerve from exposure. But fillings, especially deep ones, can get close to the nerve endings and cause irritation and uncomfortable sensations. As the nerve heals, the sensitivity will go away. This may take a few days or weeks.
DON'T touch the treated area for at least 6-8 hours afterwards. The risk of infection is much higher in the time immediately after your filler treatment, so medical experts recommend not touching the affected area for at least that amount of time.

Signs and symptoms of allergic reactions to cheek fillers include prolonged swelling, pain, and discomfort. It may also cause itchiness and, in very rare cases, anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is the severe allergic reaction to medication or food that leads to shock, skin rashes, and low pulse rate.
It is not uncommon to experience a small degree of asymmetry immediately post-treatment due to the potential for swelling and bruising. Avoid itching, or picking around the injection site. Avoid applying intense heat to the treated area, that includes hot tubs, saunas, sunbathing or tanning. Don't drink alcohol the day of treatment, and try to avoid it for 2 days after. Avoid exercising for 2 days or until swelling subsides.

Patients often ask before or after their injections, “Will cheek filler soften?” The answer is almost always yes. Upon injection, dermal fillers may feel firmer or harden due to a healing response of the body. Additionally, the filler needs to settle into the correct and ideal position.
When you have had too much filler, then you may appear to have a bulging forehead, an overly pointy and sharp chin, and overly protruding cheekbones. Furthermore, the filler can stretch and weigh down your skin over time, which is known as filler fatigue.
Although extremely rare, dermal fillers are able to migrate within the skin if consistent and adequate pressure is applied to them. For this reason, we advise patients not to get a facial, massage (on the treated skin), or microdermabrasion for the first two weeks following their filler injections.
Not to worry though, lumps following a filler treatment are completely normal. The lumps you may experience are often caused by swelling and bruising of the treated area.
In some cases, we recommend our patients massage their fillers following treatment to smooth them out below the skin; however, too much massage too soon may cause the filler to migrate slightly.
