Very dry skin can affect how skin pick up the self-tanner's colour, and cause an uneven tan. Fortunately, this doesn't have to be the case. No matter how dry your skin is, you can still fake your way to a flawless tan while avoiding sun damage.
Do... Stay moisturized. Using a moisturizer before & during tanning is so important. If you're skin is dry not only will the tan apply unevenly, but it will begin to patch off and look very fake & odd when fading.
Tanning with dry skin is possible! When you have dry skin , summer often means nightmare! Between the tightness, the dryness and the tingling, you dare not go into the sea, and even less expose yourself to the sun , for fear of suffering. But think again, you can tan and enjoy your summer normally!
Fake tan can often cling to very dry areas, so make sure that your skin is well-hydrated. Use a moisturizer every day in the week leading up to tan application, then moisturize very dry areas, such as elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hands, 2 to 3 hours before tanning.
Moisturize ahead of time
If your skin is dry when you go in to get your spray-on tan, there's a chance the pigment could cling to dry patches, resulting in a blotchy, uneven tan. Prior to your appointment, make sure your skin is adequately hydrated from head to toe.
Hydrated skin will not only tan better but will also keep its colour for longer. Moisturise your skin twice daily to prepare your skin for the sunshine and get that long-lasting tan. Dry skin can lead to a peeling and uneven sun tan and so is effectively the enemy.
If you can, wait at least an hour before applying your self tan so you give your moisturiser enough time to really get to work on your skin.
By making sure your skin is well moisturised and hydrated you will have a better chance of applying an even self-tan that lasts. Use an oil free moisturiser to make sure that it doesn't create a barrier to the fake tan.
Squeeze the mousse onto a tanning mitt and apply it to the body in smooth, circular motions. Top tip: to avoid orange patches, go light on the ankles, elbows, knees, knuckles, and nose. These areas are the most absorbent and will darken quickly. The more mousse you apply, the deeper the tan will be.
Oily skin is naturally more resistant to sun than other skin. The extra oil acts as an extra layer of protection against the sun's rays. Your skin is less likely to burn than other skin types and in fact may tan quicker. Just don't forget to apply a non-comedogenic and lightweight SPF so as to not clog your pores.
Hyperpigmentation may seem like a summer thing when your skin is exposed to the sun's scorching heat. But weather conditions like dry wind, cold temperatures, and decreased humidity can result in dry skin patches and worsen conditions such as acne or eczema, causing darker patches.
It will react with amino acids in dead skin cells. As such, you don't want to apply it to the large swathes of dead skin peeling from your body. Regardless of the health costs, a fake tan on peeling skin won't look right anyway. It will come away in flakes and have an uneven appearance.
Q1: How do you get rid of fake tan quickly? To get rid of fake tan quickly, try soaking in a warm bath with baby oil, followed by exfoliating with an exfoliating mitt. You can also use DIY methods such as applying a mixture of baking soda and lemon juice to tough areas.
Make sure you avoid lotions that contain petroleum, mineral oils, coconut oil or Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) – all of these can compromise your fake tan. Instead choose products made specifically to help nourish and maintain fake tans, such as tan extending lotions or nourishing body butter.

Additionally, self-tanners can dry out the skin, leading to flakiness, uneven texture, and increased sensitivity. Many tanning products contain alcohol and artificial fragrances, which can strip the skin of its natural moisture and cause irritation, especially for those with dry or sensitive skin.
Moisturizing creates a smooth, hydrated base that helps your self-tanner glide on evenly. Without it, dry areas of your body—like elbows, knees, and ankles—soak up more product, leaving you with darker, blotchy areas.
Applying at night gives your self-tanner time to develop a natural tan look. Things like showering, rain, or tight clothes can mess up your tan when it's trying to settle. And some tanning products will also stain! As the self-tanner process can take up to eight hours, applying right before bed is super convenient.
AFTER THE TAN
Shower lightly in cold – lukewarm water for 45 seconds ONLY after your desired development time. Use plain water, don't use shower gels, scrubs, shampoos or loofah during the first 24 hours after your treatment. Pat your skin dry. Do not rub or scrub your skin.
