Most barbells in commercial and home gyms are about 45 pounds or 20kg. In fact, many people call a regulation 20kg barbell a "45 pound barbell" even though it actually weighs 44lbs (2.2 pounds in a kg). Women's regulation barbells weight slightly less at 15kg (33 pounds) due to their slightly shorter length.
Weights of Olympic lifting bars vary, with 10kg, 15kg, and 20kg being the most common.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a man shouldn't lift anything heavier than 25kg, while the safe lifting weight for a woman is no heavier than 16kg.
Is a 20kg Barbell Enough to Start? A 20kg barbell is often a good starting point for beginners to hone in their technique and is a sensible starting warm-up weight for experienced lifters. As you progress, you can incrementally increase the weight.

A non-calibrated plate will usually be very close to the listed weight but almost never exact. Calibrated plates are exact. This is critical when preparing for competition.
20 kilo barbells are thicker, and 15 kilo barbells are a little bit shorter. When you have both, it's quite easy to tell. And if you just have one type of barbell in gym, it's more likely that it's gonna be this 20 kilo one.
The "gauge" of your piercing is the thickness of the bar that goes through your piercing. In other words, it's the barbell's thickness. Note that the thicker the barbell, the lower the gauge size. So a 12 gauge (or 12G) barbell is much thicker than a 20 gauge (20G) barbell.
