Scars can take up to 2 years to mature fully and go through stages of healing. This slow process may explain why some people do not experience scar tissue pain immediately. Initially, the scarring may look minimal, but the scar may get bigger over many weeks or become raised, firm, and thick.
Remodeling (3 Months to 1 Year): During this phase, your body continues to adjust the scar tissue. The scar gradually becomes flatter, lighter, and less noticeable. This process can take several months, and some scars may take up to a year to fully mature.
Scar tissue cannot be broken down nor can it be removed. Anyone who claims to breakdown scar tissue does not understand what scar tissue is. Scar tissue (not to be confused with adhesions) replaces normal tissue that is damaged. If you break down you are essentially saying that you are causing a new wound.
You cannot get rid of a keloid scar, but there are treatments that can help improve how it looks and reduce irritation. Treatments may include: steroid injections or cream. silicone dressings or gels.
For best results, you should perform scar massage for at least 10 minutes, twice a day, for six months. You should only stop sooner than that if the scar starts showing signs of infection or you experience intolerable discomfort.
Additionally, physical therapy can help to reduce the risk of scar tissue build up and break up any scar tissue that is already there.
Increased temperature is a common physiological effect that helps to break down scar tissue. Increased temperature involves both superficial and deep tissues increasing in temperature. Increasing temperature of tissues within the body helps to loosen scar tissue.
Physical therapy can be a viable option for scar tissue treatment and associated pain. Physical therapists use a combination of active and passive motion to break down and retrain scar tissue. Active motion refers to a patient moving the affected area under his or her own power.
It's best to begin such therapy soon after the surgery, though long enough after for the area to heal. However, the therapy can still be beneficial years later. "By then, scar tissue tends to be really stiff and not easy to move," says Dr.
Laser surgery.
Most laser therapy for scars is done in conjunction with other treatments, including injections of steroids, use of special dressings, and the use of bandages. Multiple treatments may be required, regardless of the initial type of therapy. Pulse dye laser is a good choice to use for keloids.
Massage is a way of softening and flattening scars and reducing the adhesions between the different layers of the tissue, making the scar tissue more flexible. It can also help alleviate any itching and over-sensitivity of the scar.
Physical therapy can help break up scar tissue that has formed around a joint. Learning flexibility exercises and stretches can help to reduce stiffness and relieve some of the discomforts that scarring can bring.
Our study provided the first evidence that two times of 24-h fasting in a week before or after wound injury was sufficient to induce faster wound closure, enhance re-epithelialization and dermal regeneration, and reduce scar formation in mice with diabetic or burn wounds.
Why internal scars won't stop growing. Normal scar tissue forms to heal an internal wound and quietly retreats when the job is done. Scar Tissue Mobilization
Start by pushing skin around your scar very gently. Sink your finger down until you feel resistance and then gently move your fingers up, down, left, and right. Go around your scar and hold for a few seconds at spots that you notice are more “stuck”. Move in towards the scar and onto the scar.
A physical therapist may be able to help get rid of scar tissue with a specialized treatment known as the Graston Technique. This technique promotes muscle fiber separation, which can alleviate pain caused by scar tissue and can even help restore flexibility.
It is often described as aching, burning, stabbing, throbbing, or tingling in or around the scarred area. The pain may be constant or intermittent, and its intensity can vary depending on factors such as the size and location of the scar, the extent of tissue damage, and individual pain tolerance.
Scar Process
It will take six to 18 months for the scar to have its final appearance. Your scar should gradually soften and fade over these six to 18 months, but will look pink initially (photo B). Some scars never fade. If your scar stays pink after 12 to 18 months please call to discuss options.
