Psychotherapist Azra Alic dismantled the belief that our acne is visible and obvious to other people through a number of behavioural experiments with her own clients. Turns out, no one really sees your acne the way you see it in yourself.
In studies, teen girls often say that acne makes them feel unattractive. Given that acne can lead to such experiences and feelings, it's not surprising that researchers have found that people with acne often develop depression or anxiety.
This study demonstrates that those with acne scars are perceived differently—with unfavorable attributes. Furthermore, the skin is more frequently the first facial feature noticed if an individual has acne scars vs clear skin.
The severity of acne is often categorised as: mild – mostly whiteheads and blackheads, with a few papules and pustules. moderate – more widespread whiteheads and blackheads, with many papules and pustules. severe – lots of large, painful papules, pustules, nodules or cysts; you might also have some scarring.
Acne is a common issue for many people, especially for teenagers and young adults in their 20s. Some have mild symptoms, while others can have very severe issues. Acne effects around 90% of adolescents with the prime age across all genders being the teenage years of 14-19 years old.
Most people have acne on and off for several years before their symptoms start to improve as they get older. Acne often disappears when a person is in their mid-20s. In some cases, acne can continue into adult life. About 3% of adults have acne over the age of 35.

Ice doesn't necessarily help clear up acne or pimples — particularly if you're suffering from cystic and nodular acne — but it can help inflammation. This works because acne is an inflammatory condition meaning that it causes flare-ups that contribute to swelling and redness.
Stress acne typically presents as an array of small, red or pink pimples that can be scattered across various areas of the face. These facial acne pimples often take the form of whiteheads or blackheads and can progress into pustules, which are red, pus-filled bumps, or papules, which are small, raised bumps.
People with acne scars are perceived as less attractive, confident, happy, healthy, successful, and less likely to lead promising futures compared to people with clear skin.
People with acne were perceived as being unattractive, sad, lonely, distant, unhealthy, disheveled and shy as compared to people with clear skin (p<0.05).
People with acne are at a significantly higher risk for anxiety and depression. For adolescents, this is often compounded by other rapid changes during puberty and school bullying. This acne trauma can have long-lasting effects on self-esteem even after your spots are gone.
You're beautiful just as you are. The more skin products you use on your face the more it can get worse. It doesn't matter what other people think of you or say because of your acne. If anyone can't look past your acne and accept you for who you are then they're not really someone you want to be around, right?
Nodulocystic acne (Figure 2) is thought to be less common in African Americans than Caucasians based on a study published in 1970 by Wilkins et al26 of 4,654 incarcerated men.
Acne Isn't Your Fault
However, it's important to remember that acne is not your fault. Many factors can contribute to facial acne, including genetics, hormones, and medications. If you're struggling with acne, know that you're not alone and that it's nothing to be ashamed of.
A gentler approach is to use a warm wash cloth or compress. This softens the pimple and helps it form a complete head, which makes it easier to remove. Apply gentle pressure to remove the pus, then apply ice to reduce inflammation.
Increased water intake often leads to improved skin clarity and reduced acne severity. Many people report fewer breakouts and a more even skin tone after consistently increasing their water consumption. Hydrated skin may appear plumper and healthier, making existing acne less noticeable.

Salicylic acid, mentioned above, is one of these. Another important ingredient to look for is benzoyl peroxide. In addition to reducing oil and removing dead skin cells, benzoyl peroxide also helps kill the bacteria that cause the pimples.
Small red, tender bumps (papules) Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips. Large, solid, painful lumps under the skin (nodules) Painful, pus-filled lumps under the skin (cystic lesions)
The truth is, most of the time, we are the only ones who notice every little imperfection about ourselves. Most people don't scrutinise our appearance with the same metaphorical magnifying glass that we use on ourselves.
Regular cleansing, twice a day, is ideal for removing those layers of old oil and makeup. I often recommend a topical retinoid cream to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin. Retinoids also have some anti-inflammatory effects, and they increase the rate at which our skin cells divide. This helps to heal the skin faster.
