The answer is they can make a temporary difference in how your lips look, but not as much as getting a filler injected by a doctor. "It makes your lips seem just a little more bee-stung," Hollywood makeup artist Tasha Reiko Brown says.
Lip Plumpers vs.
“Lip plumpers are a temporary effect that may last 60 to 90 minutes at most — perfect for some selfie action or a date night,” Davis shares. Those looking for lasting results, however, will want to visit a professional.
Other formulas may not last as long. One 2019 study in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science of 60 women who applied a ginger-infused lip plumper found that the volumizing effects kicked in within 15 minutes and remained for close to 30 before petering out.
Key Ingredients in Lip Plumpers
Capsaicin is often used, which is a compound found in hot peppers, as well as ingredients like peppermint and ginger that also cause a similar effect. “The tingling sensation is from these ingredients, and it indicates that they're working!” Rosario adds.
For a lip plumper on the go, add a couple of drops of cinnamon oil to your fave lip gloss. For a more intense effect, mix cinnamon powder with something similar; Vaseline, olive oil, honey, or any balm, and apply this to your lips for a minute or so before removing with a damp towel.
Overuse is the main cause of side effects, that is, using it too often in a 24 hour period. If the product overused the lips may become quite irritated, and could become dry, split, crack, and even bleed. The top lip is the most vulnerable as the skin is often thinner than on the bottom.
According to naturopathic doctor Tess Marshall, N.D., essential oils are a popular way to plump your lips naturally. "Even unnatural products use these ingredients for their properties," she says. She suggests using essential oils of cinnamon, cayenne pepper, and peppermint, which are the most effective.
Apply 1 layer at least 3 times a day. Start with Lip Filler at the center of your lips and work towards the corners. Make sure to stay inside your lip line.
The formula glides on smoothly. You could wear the gloss on top of lipstick, but to get the full plumping effect I've found it's best to apply it on bare lips.
Try an immediate lip-plumping fix.
To get fast lip wrinkle-smoothing results, choose a lip plumper made with ingredients that moisturize to even out fine lines and minimize their appearance, like tinted lip balms, lip oils or moisturizing lipsticks.
As we age, the decreased production of new collagen and elastin molecules make lips appear thinner. They lose the vital subdermal structure needed to remain full and plump.
"The lighter the color lipstick you use, the plumper the lip look. Darker lipsticks make your lips look smaller, while lighter lipsticks make them poutier." You can use a lip stain, lipstick, a lip tint, or a lip crayon for this step, whichever formula works best for you.
Lip liner for thin lips is by far the quickest and easiest way to temporarily increase the size of your lips. Select a shade that matches your chosen lipstick and slightly outline your natural lip line. Avoid using a dark liner on the lips as this will make them appear thinner than they actually are.
HYDRATE: It is vital that you keep your lips hydrated by drinking enough water. Drinking sufficient water will help you get plump lips. Also, use a good lip balm with SPF.
Gently exfoliate with a scrub designed for the lips, applied with a toothbrush. Brush in small, circular motions to help get the blood flowing in your lips, which will give them more natural volume and a healthy, rosy colour. Not only will your lips look naturally fuller, but you'll remove all the dead skin cells.
“Staying hydrated and promoting the production of collagen by drinking [plenty of] of water, getting eight hours of sleep, taking a probiotic, taking a multivitamin, and using an SPF in your lip products when outside will help [keep your lips looking full],” Patel says.

Lighter shades will always make your lips look plumper. Subtle shades like pale pink or light mauve may enhance the look of your lips.
Whereas the rest of the face may not show signs of getting older until patients reach their late 20s to 30s, lips can begin to lose important volume starting in the late teens. As the process continues and the mouth loses collagen, the lips can begin to flatten out and appear much thinner in just a few short years.
