Shampoos with sulphates are perfectly fine for more stubborn oil or people who don't wash their hair more than twice a week. Regardless, the best way to wash hair is to not leave these chemicals in your hair for longer than a minute, especially if your hair is colour-treated.

I don't recommend leaving shampoo in your hair for too long. Especially if the shampoo you are using contains silicone/sulfates (which most do) it can dry out your hair, damage it, and make it frizzy. I'd say get a good lather and make sure you clean your hair thoroughly, and rinse it out right when you are done.
