A washcloth (THIS is the one I swear by) is most beneficial when it's used to wipe off the make up from your face that the act of cleansing and rinsing wouldn't achieve. Also, the washcloth provides a bit of exfoliation, which further helps achieve clear and radiant skin.
Using a clean, soft washcloth is effective for cleaning your face, but unless you use a new one every day, you should probably stick with using your hands to scrub, Dr. Green says. Also, ideally, you should change the towel you use to dry your face every couple of days to keep bacteria at bay, adds Dr. Gohara.
Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser that does not contain alcohol. Wet your face with lukewarm water and use your fingertips to apply cleanser. Resist the temptation to scrub your skin because scrubbing irritates the skin. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry with a soft towel.
Using a washcloth to exfoliate can be irritating to the skin and cause damage. Washcloths are often not very clean and harbor bacteria that cause breakouts.
Because of the damp, hot environment they live in, washcloths are prime breeding grounds for bacteria and mold, says Dr. King. "When used, germs [on a dirty washcloth] are then spread or reintroduced to the skin, which can cause irritation and even infection.
However, most people tend to re-use their washcloths, which can make acne worse. Each time you wash your face, the washcloth picks up bacteria, which then replicate on the cloth and are reintroduced to your face the next time you wash.
Joel Schlessinger recommends cleansing skin with your hands over a shower loofah or washcloth. The cons: There's one thing hands don't do particularly well, and that's exfoliation. Because hands are not considered optimal for exfoliation, they can leave behind dirt, oil and dead skin cells.
With that said, if you want to avoid as much bacteria, fungi, and mold growth as possible, it's best to change your washcloth daily, Dr. Vij and Dr. Tierno say. After you shower, they both recommend, rinse your washcloth to get rid of as many dead skin cells and bacteria as possible.
As a general rule, launder your bath towel (or swap in a clean one) at least once a week and your washcloth a couple times a week. Wash towels more frequently if you're sick to avoid reinfection.
You can exfoliate with a washcloth.
Dermatologist Ally Wheeler says, “washcloths are excellent; the only caveat is that you don't want to scrub too hard. The best way to use them is to lather up the washcloth with soap or a cleanser, and then gently scrub your skin in circular motions.”
Gohara recommends Dove's Beauty Bar because it "won't strip away skin's moisture like soap can." Although it looks like a bar of soap, it's good for your face. It's considered a non-soap cleanser made with moisturizing cream to keep your skin soft, but clean.
“To cleanse your face, gently massage your cleanser onto wet skin. Then, take a clean and damp washcloth and wipe the cleanser and make up away, ensuring you don't apply too much pressure to the skin's surface. Gently pat dry with a clean towel.”
“Unless you've been sweating heavily, have visible dirt on the skin, or have used heavy cosmetics, in some cases washing just with water is adequate.”
Without a washcloth, you're just rubbing the dirt around your body. There's nothing there to remove all the day's sweat and germs. And don't even try to suggest rubbing the bar of soap around your body.
“A toner or toning lotion can be even better than washing in the morning,” says Carlen. “This is because your day cream penetrates better when your skin is damp but you don't want to strip your skin just to put nutrients back in.”
"Neither are necessary," explains Dr. Mudgil. "But if you're going to choose one, wash cloths are much better than loofahs, provided you only use the cloth one time before washing it. Both can harbor bacteria, but loofahs are much more prone to doing so given all their 'nooks and crannies.
Most people should wash their sheets once per week. If you don't sleep on your mattress every day, you may be able to stretch this to once every two weeks or so. Some people should wash their sheets even more often than once a week.
Hand Towels are Larger
At about 16” x 30”, hand towels are larger than face towels (or washcloths) which generally measure at only 13” x 13.” It's easier to tell them apart at a glance just by seeing the size difference.
The Cleaning Institute recommends washing bath towels after three uses. If you shower every day, that means laundry almost twice a week. Regular laundry is sufficient to clean towels and remove any germs that are starting to accumulate.
Most of the times, we leave towels in dark bathrooms where they could be exposed to disease-causing bacteria. In a study, Charles Gerba, microbiologist, University of Arizona, found 90 per cent of bathroom towels to have been contaminated with coliform bacteria while 14 per cent of them were found to carry E coli.
Adults: Four bath and two hand towels per week, plus two washcloths per day. Kids: Four bath and four hand towels per week, plus two washcloths per day. Guests: Two bath and hand towels for each guest, plus two washcloths daily.
Many doctors say a daily shower is fine for most people. (More than that could start to cause skin problems.) But for many people, two to three times a week is enough and may be even better to maintain good health. It depends in part on your lifestyle.
Scrubbing can strip the skin of its natural protective barrier. The best way to clean skin is with your fingertips, gently massaging for at least a minute or two. “To exfoliate, look for ingredients in your cleansers that contain salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid or fruit enzymes,” says Haley.
What should I wash first? Wash from top to bottom. This will allow the soap to rinse off your skin. Focus on the parts of your body that need it the most such as under your arms, breasts, vulva and feet.
