"As we age, it's completely normal for our hair, including eyebrows and lashes, to thin," says Audrianna Mora, the Global Education Manager of RevitaLash Cosmetics. Over time, skin loses its elasticity, causing hair follicles to become brittle and fall out.
Why do my eyebrows become lighter? Hair loss causes eyebrow causes. It could be caused by infections, skin conditions, hormonal changes or an overactive immune system when one or both eyebrows become thin. Nutritional shortcomings, physical trauma, or emotional stress can also cause brows decrease.

The question as to whether your brows should be lighter or darker than your hair colour is a debate that many beauticians have had over the years and really, there is no real right or wrong answer!
Both types of thyroid imbalance are linked to eyebrow hair loss. Specifically, in hypothyroidism, a person may notice hair loss in the outer third of the eyebrow, which is the thinnest part that points toward the ears. “While it depends on many factors, including the tweezers you use, how often you pluck and how traumatic it is for your hair, you won't be stuck with thin eyebrows forever,” says dermatologist Shilpi Khetarpal, MD. “Most of the time, they grow back.”
Perfect Eyebrows Sin No. 9: Your Eyebrows Are Too Light
The fix: For perfect eyebrows that look totally natural, choose products that match the base of your hair color. That means those of us with highlights should use a brow product in a shade that matches our base color, not our highlights.
In a study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, darker brows were found to make a person look younger, since we seem to (subconsciously) associate defined contrasts in facial features with youth. That makes sense, considering eyebrows do tend to lighten with age.
Some people have also discovered that olive oil keeps their eyebrows looking dark. Dr. Chacon, who serves on the advisory board for Smart Style Today, says this color effect can indeed occur, enhancing the appearance of brows.
Unfortunately, there's little to no evidence that any of the ingredients in Vaseline, which is a brand name for petroleum jelly, can grow thicker or fuller eyebrows. However, Vaseline is very moisturizing and may actually help eyebrows look fuller and thick, even if they're actually growing at the same rate.
Also, as you get older, you want more definition in your brows. Definition can often be defined as a little bit richer, darker, more distinct. Just like blush can help enliven the vitality of an older face, your brows can give you definition as you tend to get a little more washed out.
Aging – Prostaglandin is the hormone that signals your eyebrows to grow. As we get older, our natural prostaglandin production declines. That's why it's common around menopause for our eyebrows to thin, grow a little longer, become coarse and even change color.
Brows may become more sparse as a result of aging, stress, or pregnancy. In some cases, hair thinning is a result of nutrient deficiencies or certain health conditions. You can always use makeup to make the brows appear fuller, but if you're looking to actually grow the hair back, it's a bit more tricky.
The sun activates the lightening properties of the lemon. You'll get the best results if your brows are already a warm brown and you just want to lighten them a shade or two. The longer you're out in the sun, the lighter your brows will get, so be careful!
If the cause is a poor diet, thicken existing hairs with a tinted brow wax. A diet lacking in vitamins A, B, D or E, or an iron deficiency, can be the culprit for your sparse eyebrows. In addition to adopting a well-balanced diet, a key step to getting fuller brows is to thicken or darken the individual hairs.
What Does Thyroid Hair Loss Look Like? We all lose some hair daily, and then it regrows. But irregular functioning of T3 and T4 can cause that regrowth cycle to be disturbed — meaning you might notice thinning hair over time, without hair replacement. This could affect your eyebrows, body hair, and eyelashes, too.
Madarosis is a terminology that refers to loss of eyebrows or eyelashes. This clinical sign occurs in various diseases ranging from local dermatological disorders to complex systemic diseases. Madarosis can be scarring or non-scarring depending upon the etiology.
Laura Martin, a Licensed Cosmetologist, explains, "Brows should generally be slightly darker than your hair color. However, lightening your brows a few shades can soften your features and may be a good option if your hair is very dark." Select a blonde color if you have red hair.
Olive oil is also good for your eyebrows, as it contains Vitamins A and E which helps your eyebrow hair grow faster and thicker and help keep it dark-hued. To Use: Massage your eyebrows with warm olive oil for 5 minutes before going to bed. Leave it on overnight, then rinse it off with warm water the next morning.
