Experiencing lumps in lips after injectable filler is extremely common—and lumps most often resolve naturally with time. Gentle lip massage 5-7 days after the treatment can help smooth any lumps and bumps in the lips.
Give your lips a very gentle massage. Imagine that you are making Italian pasta using a “mattarello”, a rolling pin. Gently press your lips between your thumbs and forefingers and roll your lips between your fingers. Massage your lips 2-3 days after having a lip injection.
Massage can encourage the filler to be broken up by the body more quickly. But in practice this still takes a long time (like weeks of daily vigorous massage) to improve the outcome. This may also spread the product over a larger area causing more problems.
In some cases, we recommend our patients massage their fillers following treatment to smooth them out below the skin; however, too much massage too soon may cause the filler to migrate slightly.
Not to worry though, lumps following a filler treatment are completely normal. The lumps you may experience are often caused by swelling and bruising of the treated area. We would not recommend massaging or using force to reduce the lumps yourself, as this may impact your final results.
Massage prevents any uneven distribution of the product and helps to ensure a good balance in terms of the lip shape, projection, fullness and proportions. This creates the more natural-looking finish. Dr Barbara Kubicka explains: “It is important to be consistent, massage the area evenly, and avoid strong pressure.”
Generally, any lumps or bumps that appear after fillers will disappear on their own within one to two weeks. Give the treatment a couple of weeks to improve, applying ice regularly.
The most common cause of lumps after a filler treatment is swelling and bruising from the injections themselves. These should naturally subside within the first week.
Your lips may feel stiff or rigid immediately after injection with dermal fillers. Don't worry — this is entirely normal, and the lip fillers will soften with time. Your lips may also be swollen and tender, which can contribute to the lip filler feeling hard under the skin.
That said, these injectable treatments take some time to integrate into your tissues, and it's normal for your dermal filler to take up to two weeks to fully settle into your face.
The filler can take several weeks to soften and settle into your skin. This means that patients won't see the ultimate results of their treatment immediately. Although individual results will vary, many people achieve the full effect within two weeks after receiving their injections.
The Results Improve Over Time
Because these injections stimulate your body's production of collagen and elastin, the final results of treatment won't be seen for several weeks. Even as the hyaluronic acid is processed by your body, healthy collagen and elastin grow at a more significant rate.
Dermal filler doesn't 'normally', move after treatment. Immediately after treatment, in certain areas of the face, I do gently massage the area/s that were injected to help mold the product and prevent lumps. It does take about 2 weeks for the filler to settle and integrate into the tissue.
What do I do if I see a lump after I receive lip filler? The first time you feel or see one is a scary, confusing experience, but not to worry! The lump is probably benign and can be caused by swelling, bruising, or a hematoma at the injection site.

You are not allowed to smile for a few days after a lip filler. Facial expressions such as smiling, laughing, or frowning should have zero impact on your lip filler. It is actually better for you to smile and gently massage your lips, to help spread the product and produce a more natural end-result.
Avoid overfilling
Even though dermal injections usually come in 1mL syringes, you should avoid using the entire syringe in one appointment.
HOW MANY SYRINGES OF JUVEDERM DO I NEED? Most nasolabial folds will typically require two syringes to fully correct. One syringe of Juvederm is sometimes sufficient for mild nasolabial folds. For lip augmentation, one syringe will sculpt and enhance the lips.
Whilst it is somewhat normal to feel small lumps, depending on how thick the filler used was), if they feel one lump in particular, they can gently massage it in between their finger and their thumb, over a period of time, and it will help to “break down” the lump.
Your swelling should go away after 24 to 48 hours, but it may take up to a week. If you want your lips filled before a big event, like a wedding, you should schedule the procedure at least two weeks ahead of time to make sure you've completely recovered.
Now for some of the finer points of lip filler after care. Use aquaphor as a lip gloss for the rest of the day to reduce risk of infection. Eating is fine, but minimize wiping or rubbing your lips. Avoid kissing, massaging, smoking, or drinking through a straw and only touch the mouth area gently.
It should be noted that the lips may feel hard for around two weeks after injections. This is due to swelling, the filler settling, and the healing process. After all of this resolves, your lips should feel natural.
