Niacinamide would be great to use while on accutane. It'll help with post acne marks, redness and it's an antioxidant (we hate free radical damage!) Would you recommend vitamin c serum in the morning and niacinamide in the night time to get rid of acne scars?
While on Accutane, your skin becomes extremely sensitive, therefore limiting the types of products you can use within your skincare routine. So or the past six months or so, I've been sticking to a gentle cleanser, hydrating moisturizer, and a facial sunscreen with 50 SPF.
No interactions were found between isotretinoin and Vitamin C.
Toner – Toner isn't particular necessary when on Roaccutane, as it tightens the pores and can often be a bit too harsh. Instead, we suggest opting for a mist or spray that you can spritz whenever you like. This will help add on-the-go hydration to the skin, and also feels a little luxurious!
The authors advise against routine vitamin B12 supplementation in all isotretinoin patients because vitamin B12 aggravates acne. Patients identified as being deficient by periodic monitoring should be treated.
Zenovia: After getting off Accutane, it's very important to continue being diligent about skin care. Incorporating an effective spot treatment, lightweight moisturizer, sunscreen, and retinol into your routine will help keep the skin balanced and healthy.
Accutane makes the skin very fragile, dry and sensitive so if you use a low dose Retin-A or glycolic acid while on Accutane you can irritate and even damage your skin. You must be off Isotretinoin (Accutane) for at least 6 months to a year before you even consider having a chemical peel.
AVOID HARSH SALICYLIC ACID TOPICALS
Salicylic acid creams may work as monotherapy without Accutane, but may be extremely harsh on your skin while on Accutane. Give your skin a chance to heal without using keratolytic chemicals that can further irritate and sensitize.
Take with food: Isotretinoin absorbs twice as well if you take it with meals. Isotretinoin is a lipophilic medication. One study showed 1.5-2 times greater absorption in the fed (large breakfast with 28 grams of fat) versus a fasting state. This difference in absorption is not a trivial concern.
Do not have cosmetic procedures to smooth your skin (such as waxing, laser, dermabrasion) during and for 6 months after isotretinoin therapy. Skin scarring may occur. Avoid the use of alcohol while taking this medication because it may increase the risk of certain side effects (such as pancreatitis).
Using ISOtretinoin together with benzoyl peroxide topical may increase skin irritation. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs.
In addition, past breakouts can result in redness which can remain for months after completing Accutane treatment. Both of these problems will resolve gradually over time. Plus, using calming moisturizers such as Aveeno Ultra-Calming Cream or Eucerin Anti-Redness products can be quite helpful as well."
In the evening use a gentle, non comedogenic moisturizer such as Cetaphil night cream or Neutrogena deep moisture night cream. In the morning, use a good sunscreen such as Elta MD or Vanicream. If your lips are very dry, we recommend using Vaseline or Aquaphor throughout the day.
In summary, yes you can have chemical peels and laser after Accutane, if it has been greater than 6 months.
Accutane, or Isotretinoin, is an oral medication used to treat moderate to severe, nodulocystic acne. It is a derivative of Vitamin A, and helps to improve the blocked-up material within whiteheads and blackheads. It has become a mainstay in the treatment of acne, and is one of the most effective treatments available.
Lubricate your skin with a high quality facial oil. On Accutane, your skin is thirsty. To lubricate your skin from it's deepest layers, put on a facial oil. I like to do this straight out of the shower when my skin is warm and pores are opened up.
Hormonal acne is more likely to come back after a course of Roaccutane (Accutane) has successfully cleared it. Besides being stubborn to treat, hormonal acne causes redness for prolonged periods, scarring and pigmentation.
While you are taking Accutane, the medication actually shrinks oil glands and dries out the skin. But when you stop taking it, your pores will return to their original size. Chemical peels can improve the skin's texture and minimize the appearance of pores by peeling off the old layer of skin.
Retinol or vitamin A serums can to a certain degree help with acne scarring however this is also contraindicated while on Accutane.
Conclusion: Vitamin B12/folic acid treatment should be given under medical surveillance before and during isotretinoin therapy. Supplementation of these vitamins should be recommended in cases of their deficiency, so as to decrease the risks of neuropsychiatric and occlusive vascular diseases.
A great question for your Dermatologist! In general, we recommend patients avoid Vitamin A while on Accutane therapy. Your body is already receiving a large amount of this vitamin with the medication, and too much Vitamin A can cause increase your chances of dry skin and other side effects.
“I recommend a gentle cleanser,” Dr. Marchbein says. “That can be anything from Cetaphil to CeraVe to Neutrogena to micellar water.” For me, the perfect cleanser turned out to be this Cetaphil ultra-gentle cleanser, which I used morning and night.
