A lip flip involves injecting a type of abobotulinumtoxin A, such as Botox, Dysport, or Jeuveau, into the top lip. The goal is to relax the orbicularis oris muscle, which helps form and shape the lips. The injection encourages the top lip to relax and “flip” outwards, giving the subtle illusion of a fuller lip.
A lip flip is a nonsurgical procedure that makes your lips appear fuller. Your healthcare provider injects botulinum toxin into the corners of your mouth (oral commissures) and the edges of your lips (vermillion border).
That's right: the original Nurse Shara Lip Flip is a stand-alone treatment for the top or bottom lip that doesn't call for additional lip fillers.
The Botox lip flip involves injecting 4-6 units of Botox above the upper lip at the center (near the cupid's bow) and near the corners of the mouth.
While dermal fillers increase lip size, a lip flip only creates the illusion of a larger lip without adding volume. Lip flips are less invasive and expensive than dermal fillers.
A general rule to ensure safety at most times, as stated in many anatomical studies, is puncturing the lips from the vermillion border and to never inject filler deeper than 2.5 mm at any point.
Just as with traditional facial Botox, lip flip results take time. While some patients see the results in as early as three to four days, you'll get the full lip flip look 10 to 12 days after your injections.
2) Lip Flip
Getting a lip flip procedure aims to resolve your gummy smile--the smile where our upper lips push farther back to show our gums. Lip flips also make our lips look fuller and plumper. Our plastic surgeons will inject about 4-6 units of Botox at the orbicularis oris as the lips are a bit rolled up.
The upper lip's skin and the nose's base are very closely linked. As such, if a plastic surgeon doesn't have the appropriate skills or experience, a lip lift can distort the appearance of the nose, particularly the base and the nostrils. However, this only occurs when a lip lift is done poorly.
You can carefully eat or drink shortly after your lip flip procedure. However, take care not to eat any messy foods that may cause you to wipe your face or lips for at least three days. Avoid using drinking straws or smoking for at least three days. Puckering or contracting your lips may cause the Botox® to migrate.
Necrosis. Necrosis refers to the death of tissue due to reduced blood flow. Necrosis can occur as a result of lip filler if the injection is preventing blood flow to the tissue or if the injection damages the tissue directly. Necrosis can cause side effects such as severe pain, paleness and discolouration.
Using a 4-mm 30-gauge needle facilitates precise HA placement into the safer subcutaneous plane of the lip and lowers the pressure needed to extrude the filler, which might optimize patient comfort.
You may hear the phrase “aspirate on bone” – this is simply normal aspiration when you are on bone. However, you can also aspirate in soft tissues, in fat, in the lips – anywhere. We teach that you should aspirate wherever you are injecting.
Most commonly, only a vein is ruptured and a bruise is the only consequence. However, it is also possible to rupture an artery during facial injections. This can lead to more significant bleeding and bruising. Accidental injection of fillers into an artery can be a serious complication of dermal fillers.
A good injector should know where to never inject.
A qualified, experienced injector should never inject the area near the orbital bone right above the pupil. If Botox is injected here, it can drift down toward the upper eyelid and cause an eyelid droop. This can last from weeks to even months.
Lips. Most commonly, just 1 syringe is used for augmenting the lips, regardless of the type of filler you use. Occasionally, we will build up to 2 or even 3 syringes in the lips for a patient, but this is usually an older patient who has lost some of the definition and structure in the lips, as well as volume.
Lips: The lips are one of the first facial areas to experience aging signs. You can use hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers to add volume to your lips and deal with lines and wrinkles around the lips (smoker's lines). You could inject around 10 to 20 syringes of filler (total) for the upper and lower lips.

The swelling that can often occur after Lip Fillers can cause the lips to look a little uneven for a short time. This doesn't necessarily mean that anything has gone wrong and it may just take a little time for the product to fully settle and for residual swelling to subside.
Are Lip Fillers Supposed to Feel Hard? Your lips may feel stiff or rigid immediately after injection with dermal fillers. Don't worry — this is entirely normal, and the lip fillers will soften with time. Your lips may also be swollen and tender, which can contribute to the lip filler feeling hard under the skin.
Hard and tender lumps suggest that your body might have reacted to the filler. A mild allergic reaction can be sorted out quickly and easily by a prescription of steroids, which our aesthetic medical professional can provide you with. This prescription is available at most pharmacies.
It is important to keep in mind that the Botox lip flip only lasts three to four months, and you'll need to return for treatment about two to three times as often as you would for filler injections.
As with all injectable treatments, there is some downtime involved after a BOTOX lip flip. According to Dr. Dauwe, all patients should abstain from putting pressure on their lips for 3 – 4 days after their appointment. This includes activities like kissing.
After a few days, patients will notice a slight feeling of heaviness in the lip, indicating that the Botox has taken effect. Pursing the lips, pronouncing certain words, drinking from a straw, and eating may temporarily become more challenging while you become used to the adjusted function of your lip muscles.
