Pumps are routinely sent out with a 24mm or 28mm flange size. Some do a 21mm option. Now, obviously, having supported breastfeeding for 18 years, I have seen a lot of nipples and measured a lot too! It's actually quite rare to see a nipple of greater than 21mm.
It's shaped like a funnel, forming a vacuum seal around the nipple. This helps create the suction necessary to extract milk from the breast during pumping. Flanges typically range from 15 to 36mm, and most generic pump kits will come with a 24mm flange.
If you measured up to 17mm you'll fit in a 21mm flange. If you measure up to 22mm use size 24mm. If you measured up to 23mm select size 27mm. If you measured up to 26mm use 30mm.
Experiences with early breastfeeding challenges were determined through a combination of maternal report and clinical assessment. Results Participants ( N = 119) had an average nipple diameter of 23.4 ( SD = 3.0) mm for left nipples and 23.5 ( SD = 3.0) mm for right nipples (range = 10–34 mm).
The standard flange size is often 24mm, but you may need to select smaller or larger flanges based on your measurement. Then, compare the diameter of your nipple to the available flange size options.

Both the Spectra S1 and S2 are portable, rechargeable, quiet, and discreet. The Spectra S2 is slightly less heavy, weighing 2.5 pounds versus the Spectra S1's 3 pounds. If you have a clear color palette for your baby products in mind and want a blue pump, go with the Spectra S1.
Breast Size
Women of all sizes, with large or small breasts, can successfully breastfeed. The size and shape of your breasts have nothing to do with how much milk you will make. Your WIC staff can help you find the most comfortable breastfeeding position for your own size!
Aging. After menopause, lower levels of estrogen cause a woman's breasts to lose fat and tissue, so breasts may become less elastic; the National Library of Medicine adds that during the aging process, the areola also tends to become smaller and may nearly disappear.
Proper flange fit will be determined by the size of your nipple diameter (measured at the base of your nipple prior to pumping or breastfeeding) as well as the length and elasticity of your nipple. It is important to observe your nipple while you're pumping to ensure it is moving freely within the flange tunnel.
If you're concerned that your nipples are too big or small, also don't worry. Most new moms can nurse their babies, regardless of nipple size. Nipple size( or shape) may have more of an impact on breastfeeding than breast size, but you should still be able to breastfeed, although some women may need modifications.
The most common well pump size is a 1HP, 4” diameter submersible pump.
NOW: this doesn't mean other sizes dont exist! :) it iust means that these flange sizes happen most frequently. In my practice where we see about 100-120 patients per month we measure a momma more than 21mm maybe once every 2-3 months 🤯 pumpingtips.
A bit of swelling that goes away after a few minutes is normal due to your nipple being under constant latch (Willow 360™, Willow® 3.0, 2.0, and 1.0) and surrounded by breast milk during the pumping session. If the swelling does not resolve within 5-10 minutes, you may be using the wrong size flange.
Pumping milk with a breast pump will probably take 10 to 20 minutes for each breast, but it may take longer. To keep your milk supply up, try to pump at least every 3 to 4 hours, and breastfeed as often as you can.
The 'ideal' breast size is subjective and varies among individuals. According to a survey, the most popular ideal breast size was a C cup, chosen by 39% of participants, followed by a D cup at 29%.
Your breast size does not determine your ability to breastfeed. People with breasts of all different shapes and sizes can breastfeed successfully. The size of your breasts largely depends on how much fat they contain, not the amount of alveoli (milk-making tissue).
This is supported by a study showing that breast size is positively associated with estrogen levels, which may, in turn, indicate higher potential fertility (Jasienska, Ziomkiewicz, Ellison, Lipson, & Thune, 2004). Consequently, men are expected to be attracted to women with relatively large breasts.
Spectra breast pumps generally weigh slightly more than other pumps, but this additional weight allows for a more powerful motor and better suction. On the other hand, Medela breast pumps typically weigh less for improved portability, although they sacrifice some suction strength.
Additionally, the S2 Plus is hospital strength (270 mmHg), ensuring productive single or double pumping sessions. Like all Spectra® pumps, the S2 Plus is a true closed system, creating a hygienic barrier between outside contaminants and mother's milk. Features & Benefits: Hospital strength suction.
Price: The Spectra S1 tends to be a bit more expensive than the S2, primarily due to the integrated battery. The Spectra S1 isn't usually covered by insurance.
