Knitting Needle Lengths
Single points are available in lengths of 10 - 14” and used for knitting projects in parts or dishcloths, etc. Double pointed needles are available in lengths 6 & 8”, where 6” are preferred for socks, I-cords and projects with only a few stitches.
Sharp/ Microtex Finely woven fabrics 60/8 – 90/14 These needles feature a narrow shaft and sharper point to pierce the threads of woven fabrics. Use for stitching smooth, finely woven fabrics, such as silk, chintz, lightweight faux suede and microfiber fabrics.
Around 7 - 8 mm is average, while 5.5 - 6 mm will give you a tighter fabric. Super chunky wool, which is ideal for making a very thick blanket, will need even bigger needles.

21g needles are the most common gauge of needles used for routine blood draws and venipuncture. The gauge is small enough in which it does not cause any significant pain or discomfort during use. For most patients, their veins are of a size and stability that is best suited for the 21g needle.

Stretch needles are an essential tool in any sewing kit. Without them, achieving professional, even stitches on elastic materials can be a challenge.
A stretch needle has what is called a 'scarf' which allows extra room for the hook to pass close by and prevents skipped stitches making it ideal for use with fabrics such as Lycra, power net, two way stretch knits, silk jersey, spandex and highly elasticated synthetic fabrics or indeed elastic itself.
90/14 is typically regarded as a medium-weight needle, so you can start there for reference. If you are sewing with something lighter, like sheer cotton, you'll want a smaller needle, like an 80/12 or 75/11. And if you are sewing with something heavier, like denim, you'll want a larger needle like a 100/16 or 110/18.

Fine Needles
A significant reduction in pain and bleeding from use of a 33-gauge needle compared to a 31-gauge needle has been demonstrated.
