Salty foods can decrease the amount of calcium your body can absorb. When you consume a lot of salt, more blood calcium is flushed out of your body through your pee.
Some healthy low-calcium food options include olive oil, resistant starch, meat, rice, apples, tomatoes, eggplant, strawberries, and asparagus.
Fluids. Fluids through a drip help flush the extra calcium out of your system. Drinking plenty of fluids will help too if you can manage it.
Salty Foods
Eating foods that have a lot of salt (sodium) causes your body to lose calcium and can lead to bone loss. Try to limit the amount of processed foods, canned foods and salt added to the foods you eat each day.
Phytates and oxalates are a compound found in some common foods. They do not harm your bones directly, but can reduce the amount of calcium available to your bones by binding with calcium and other minerals that are eaten at the same time.
In mild cases of hypercalcemia, your healthcare provider may tell you to: Drink more water. Switch to a non-thiazide diuretic or blood pressure medication.
In fact, bananas, rich in potassium, may benefit bone health by helping to conserve calcium, crucial for strong bones. Other banana nutrients like magnesium and vitamin C play significant roles in bone mineralization and collagen synthesis, respectively, further supporting bone health.
Eat more whole grains, reduce refined foods and sugars. Smoking and excess consumption of alcohol increase your risk of heart problems. Also, stop or limit your dairy products intake, including milk, cottage cheese, yogurt, and ice cream. Aim at reducing your calcium intake.
Orange Juice. Drinking OJ with your morning breakfast can be beneficial for strengthening your bones. Most brands add nutrients like calcium and vitamin D to give it a boost. Check your grocery store for orange juice fortified with these added vitamins and minerals.
IV fluids and loop diuretics.
You might need treatment with IV fluids in the hospital to quickly lower your calcium level. This helps prevent heart rhythm problems or damage to the nervous system. You also might need medicines called loop diuretics if your calcium level stays high.
Some of the factors that can reduce calcium in your bones and lower your bone density (weaken your bones) include: high-salt diet. more than 4 drinks per day of caffeine-containing drinks - for example, coffee, cola and energy drinks (and, to a lesser extent, tea) excessive alcohol intake.
Egg is rich in phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and contains moderate amounts of sodium (142 mg per 100 g of whole egg) (Table 3). It also contains all essential trace elements including copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, and zinc (Table 3), with egg yolk being the major contributor to iron and zinc supply.
Drinking plenty of water: Staying hydrated may lower blood calcium levels, and it can help prevent kidney stones. Quitting smoking, if applicable: Smoking can increase bone loss. In addition to improving the health of the bones, quitting will reduce the risk of cancer and other health problems.
Phytic Acid in Oats Can Reduce Absorption of Calcium and Magnesium. Oats contain a compound called phytic acid, which is known as an “anti-nutrient” because it can bind to minerals like calcium and reduce their absorption. While most cereals contain phytic acid, oats tend to be higher in phytic acid than other cereals.
Increased thirst or more frequent urination, due to changes in the kidneys. Muscle weakness or twitches. Changes in how your brain works, such as feeling tired or fatigued or confused. Bone pain and fragile bones that break more easily.
Your provider may ask you to limit foods with a lot of calcium, or not to eat them at all for a while. Eat fewer dairy foods (such as cheese, milk, yogurt, ice cream) or don't eat them at all. If your provider says you can eat dairy foods, don't eat those that have extra calcium added.
A mild acidic solution, such as vinegar or lemon juice, is effective in breaking down calcium deposits. Additionally, a soft cloth or sponge, a toothbrush, and a plastic scraper can be useful tools in removing the buildup. Next, it is essential to apply the acidic solution to the affected areas.
Apple cider vinegar also has citric acid content that may help dissolve calcium deposits. A 2019 study of over 9,000 people found that those who consumed vinegar had a significantly lower risk of kidney stones.
Vitamin D deficiency: Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium properly, so a lack of vitamin D in the body can cause low levels of calcium in your blood (hypocalcemia). Vitamin D deficiency can be caused by an inherited disorder or by not getting enough sunlight or not consuming enough vitamin D.
