Botulinum toxin resistance may develop due to frequent exposure or high doses over time. Dr Janine explains, ”Botox can stop working due to recurrent top-ups after the 2-4 week review window. “Top-up” may not be a good term to use, as patients may get the impression that they need frequent “topping up".
Aside from immune-related causes of Botox failure, other reasons Botox may fail include: Improper product handling: Botox providers should keep Botox products refrigerated at temperatures recommended by Allergan. Failure to store Botox properly can cause Botox to degrade and become less effective.
This is probably the first question an unhappy patient will ask. Unfortunately, there is no reversal treatment for Botox. Unlike dermal fillers that can be reversed by injecting hyaluronidase, there is no procedure to “undo” Botox.
The most common reason that Botox does not work is that not enough was administered. Another reason can be that winkles are too deep for Botox to work on its own. If you have deep lines that are present at rest when you are not using the muscles, then you may not be able to get rid of those wrinkles with Botox alone.
Avoid Too Much Sun Exposure
Sun damage can reverse the benefits of Botox by breaking down collagen and causing more lines and wrinkles. The results of Botox can last longer if patients commit to sun protection after treatment. Wear the correct sunscreen and seek shade when possible.
This is what we have noticed makes Botox wear off faster: Intense exercise or anything that speeds up metabolism (think HIIT training and hot yoga) Acupuncture– a small group of clients getting acupuncture had results lasting 3-4 weeks less than regular clients.
If you are taking any other medicine, please inform your doctor before getting a Botox injection. Interactions with antibiotics, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, sleeping pills, cold or allergy medicine, bronchodilators, and many other prescriptions and over the counter drugs have been reported.
Avoid Too Many Movements: Staying still helps. Lying down, bending, or exercising may move the Botox from its position. Stay Indoors: Sun exposure may reduce your treatment's effectiveness. Keep Yourself Hydrated: It improves your skin's overall condition and increases the treatment's efficacy.
Other examples of medication which may counteract your BOTOX treatment include D-penicillamine, polymyxins and cyclosporine. In contrast, some drugs may have the opposite effect on your treatment by counteracting the results of BOTOX.
Botox cannot be reversed
This prevents the nerves from activating the muscles. Botox binds to these sites permanently, and there's no known treatment that can reverse the effects. The effects of botox do wear off over time because the nerve cells are constantly replacing their receptors.
Prolonged exposure to UV rays accelerates the aging process by breaking down collagen and elastin in the skin, which are crucial for maintaining its elasticity and firmness. This damage can diminish BOTOX®'s results, making it less effective over time.
For instance, if your forehead furrows smoothed out, but your “11” lines are still visible, you may need a touch-up with more units of Botox. Or, we may recommend fillers to resolve the problem. Your two-week evaluation is part of your initial Botox treatment.
This is an effective, well-tolerated treatment6 requiring repeat injections every 6–9 months. However, the failure rate varies from 6% to 32% depending on the studies, and increases over time.
So what could be the reasons behind Botox not working on forehead wrinkles? Some of the most common ones involve not getting enough Botox units for your skin issue, Botox not being injected correctly, or it could also be that some wrinkles are at a certain depth and could only be corrected so much.
We advise patients not to lie down, bend over, or exercise for the first four hours after a Botox injection. These activities increase blood flow to the face, which can more or less wash away the Botox before it has fully diffused to the treated areas.
Take a Zinc Supplement
In a study from the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, researchers found that people who received Botox and then took a 50-milligram zinc supplement saw a significantly longer duration in their results.
Bear in mind that more rapid Botox breakdown, and thus a shortened duration, can result from high metabolism and increased physical activity levels, especially in the muscle belly area.
Alpha-adrenergic receptor agonists (e.g., apraclonidine or brimonidine tartrate) reverse the ptosis by directly stimulating the sympathetic innervations of the superior tarsal muscle. This could open the eyelid by 1 to 2 mm. The effect of these eye drops is known to last for six to eight hours.
Exercising regularly will not cause Botox or Restylane to wear off faster, but intense workouts immediately after receiving treatment can reduce the results. As explained earlier, exercise increases facial blood flow, which can accelerate Botox or dermal filler clearance in the injection site.
Stay Hydrated & Eat Well
It's essential to stay hydrated after Botox treatments, as dehydration can lead to a speedier return of fine lines. Maintaining a healthy, balanced diet is also a good rule of thumb to lengthen the time between Botox treatments.
