The Short Answer is YES!! It can be easy to assume that a tanning lotion is not necessary when using a sunbed. You might even not like taking the time to apply it or how it feels, but it all comes down to keeping your skin protected, in a healthy condition and to the kind of results you want to achieve.
You can let the lotion sit on your body as long as you'd like. Obviously the longer you leave it on, the darker it will be. The pictures below was the color it turned after sleeping overnight with it on.
The natural bronzers help to make you tan faster and moisturize your skin, but honestly, you can still get tan without a lotion. Tanning without a lotion can also decrease the smelly ``after-tan'' smell. I would still recommend a lotion to you at first though. Another thing, do not put tanning lotion on your face!!!!
While you tan
Wear eye protection and lip balm, and bring coverups for sensitive areas if you're tanning in the nude—just in case. If your skin stings, end your session.
Mineral oils
These products have not been designed for tanning. Therefore, they do not contain UV-specific ingredients, or the appropriate skincare needed to care for skin whilst tanning. Mineral oils can magnify UV, making overexposure and burning more likely.
If you're going commando, it might be a good idea to protect your most sensitive parts, such as nipples and genitals, because the skin is more sensitive and could be more prone to burning (you definitely don't want to burn there-ouch!).
Using a lotion moisturises your skin increasing tanning results by 60%. Dry skin reflects UV rays making the tanning process longer if you do not have hydrated skin. Healthy glowing skin A lotion will help increase skin hydration which will prevent a dry and dull complexion.
There are a few things you can use in place of tanning lotion, including body butters, and aloe vera gel.
Tanning bed lotions work by moisturizing your skin, allowing your pores to open and absorb more UV light from the tanning bed. You achieve a darker tan that will last longer when you use a tanning bed lotion during your tanning bed session.
It can actually create a barrier and will keep the color from getting to your skin, just like hair will. With a tanning bed, use a moisturizer the night before and after your session. There are specific moisturizers that can be used during the tanning bed session.
Tanning lotion also doesn't take long to develop and can be washed off after two to three hours. Meanwhile, mousse and gradual tanners take at least six to eight hours to develop. You can shower immediately after using a tanning oil since that's a natural tan and not a solution that can be washed off.
Self-tanners contain DHA (dihydroxyacetone), which reacts with the amino acids in the dead layer of your skin to turn you a temporary bronzed color. The base of many of these tanners is green to prevent your tan from looking too orange.
Science tells us that there's no such thing as a safe tanning bed, tanning booth, or sun lamp. Indoor tanning can increase the risk of developing the two most common types of skin cancer — squamous cell carcinoma by 58% and basal cell carcinoma by 24%.

Wear sunscreen
Even if your goal is to tan, wearing a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 is essential. It will aid in blocking out harmful UV rays but will still also allow the skin to tan. It should be applied within 20 minutes or less of being outside.
You can lose up to 50% of your tan if you aren't using quality lotion. The lotion helps your skin absorb the UV rays and will help you get the most out of your tanning session.

However, this varies widely based on geographical location, time of day, and weather conditions. Always adhere to recommended exposure times to minimise skin damage risks.
Generally, tanning bed clients can wear a swimsuit, undergarments to tan or go nude if they prefer. No matter how much you choose to disrobe, your tanning room will be secure and private for your comfort.
Using a sun cream whilst on a tanning bed will prevent you from building a tan, due to the limited time you spend tanning. This means your tanning session is essentially wasted.
