Leave It Alone! That's right—stop touching it, squeezing it, poking it, and prodding at it altogether. “Trying to pop cystic acne is one of the worst things you can do for your skin,” says Schlessinger.
Warm compresses
Once the area surrounding the cyst is clean, apply a warm compress to the area. The warmth and moisture helps encourage the trapped substance to work its way out of the hair follicle without the need for popping the cyst. You can also use a soft warm, moist washcloth for the same results.
Stimulating the skin through massage may help promote blood circulation and reduce the appearance of acne. Specific research that provides evidence of facial massage in improving acne is limited. Some people swear by doing an olive oil massage to treat acne.
Apply a warm compress.
Warm compresses can help ease pain. They're also beneficial once a whitehead begins to form. Apply the warm compress 10 to 15 minutes three to four times a day. This allows the pimple to release pus and heal.
Cystic acne may be longer lasting because it forms deep within the skin. With treatment, some people see an improvement in 6–8 weeks . If this does not happen, the dermatologist may recommend a change of treatment. Acne on the back may be persistent.
Generally, massage will not remove a ganglion cyst. Massaging a ganglion cyst can have some benefits, though — it may cause some of the fluid to seep out of the sac, making the cyst grow smaller.
“Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils and healthy bacteria,” Grous explains, “which plays a major role in keeping moisture in—and the bad stuff out. And because dryness triggers the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, hot water can worsen preexisting acne or cause a breakout.”
The massaging movement on the skin can also help unblock follicles where oil and bacteria are trapped. Using massage therapy, patients have reported positive improvements in their acne within 72 hours or less.
While it might seem that pimples form overnight, it actually takes between 1 – 2 weeks for an acne spot to fully develop.
If ignored, cysts can take anywhere from 1-4 weeks to go away by themselves. Although your body will eventually deal with the inflammation, some cysts can persist for extended periods of time and often leave behind scars.
This can result from a combination of bacteria, oil, and dry skin cells that get trapped in your pores. Although anyone can develop acne, cystic acne tends to occur in people with oily skin. It's also more common in teens, women, and older adults with hormonal imbalances. Usually, cystic acne can improve with age.
Keep your hands away from your face during the day. Don't pick at or pop pimples or scabs. Wash your hair regularly and keep hair (which can be oily) away from your face. Occasionally oily environments, such as working at a fast food restaurant, can contribute to acne flares.
Ice may help reduce redness, swelling, and pain in inflammatory-type pimples, including pustules and cysts. However, ice may have little to no effect on noninflammatory pimples, such as comedones, more commonly known as blackheads and whiteheads.
Icing the site of your cystic breakout will help bring down the swelling, making your acne less sore and noticeable. To safely apply a cold compress, first enclose ice in a clean cloth or ziplock bag. (DO NOT put ice or ice packs directly on your skin!
Popping a sebaceous cyst at home by yourself could increase your risk for inflammation, infection, and discomfort.
Do not squeeze a cyst, as this can cause scarring and lead to infection. A person may want to place a warm compress over the cyst, to promote drainage and healing.
After cleaning the cyst, hold a warm compress on the area for five to ten minutes. The moisture and the warmth help to encourage the substance trapped under the skin to make its way out of the hair follicle. Repeat this process up to three times per day until the cyst drains on its own.
Unfortunately, cystic acne often doesn't go away on its own and requires treatment from a doctor or dermatologist. Cystic acne has psychological effects as well as visible effects on the skin.
By using warm treatments first, you can help remove any debris that's trapped in your pores. After applying warmth for 5 to 10 minutes, you can then follow up with ice for one minute to decrease inflammation and swelling. You can repeat this process daily as needed until the pimple clears up.
Acne cysts are filled with pus, which means they are often softer than nodules, and they typically last for around one month without treatment. By contrast, acne nodules will remain intact under the skin's surface, and they may be skin toned. Nodular acne can persist for weeks or months without treatment.
