Enlarged facial pores happen when oil, dirt, and dead skin cells build up in pores, making them look larger. Tretinoin minimizes pore appearance by increasing cell turnover and boosting exfoliation, which clears debris in the pores and allows pores to shrink back to their normal size.
By preventing clogged pores, tretinoin stops whiteheads and blackheads from developing in the first place. It also helps to unclog pores and get rid of existing acne breakouts.
Retinol promotes skin cell turnover and unclogs pores.
Studies show that applying retinol cream reduces pore size and keeps them cleaner, emptying the impurities that otherwise give an oversized appearance. Retinol is most effective when used as night cream.
"Retinoids clear clogged oil and dead skin cells to make pores appear smaller," Dr. Feely says. That explains why women noted improvements in their pore size when they applied a retinol every night for three months, according to a 2015 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology.
It does this by increasing the rate of skin cell production where Retin-A is applied, making it more difficult for pores to become blocked and cause acne. How long does it take for treitinoin to work? It might take two or three weeks of using Retin-A (treitinoin) to see any benefits.
Clogged pores can look enlarged, bumpy, or, in the case of blackheads, dark in color. The more oil that a person's skin produces, the more likely it is that their pores will become blocked. A person can use skin care techniques and products to manage or clear clogged pores.
extreme stress. poor skin care habits (such as not washing your face twice a day, or wearing oil-based makeup) dry skin (ironically, having dry skin can make pores more noticeable due to an increase in sebum production and accumulation of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin)
"You can use tretinoin or [over-the-counter] retinols forever."
While retinol and tretinoin unclog current problematic pores, they also keep skin cells from building up. If you still have some clogged pores after about a month of treatment, go back to the dermatologist for an extraction.
Generally, it is fine to use tretinoin every night, but you may not want to because of the initial side effects, especially when you first start. You should only use tretinoin as prescribed to avoid significant skin irritation, redness, and other side effects.
Laser Treatments
Several treatments are available at Dermatology and Laser Centre. Fractional ablative laser skin resurfacing decreases the appearance of pores and acne scars. For enlarged pores, Dr. Gallacher uses the Vbeam laser as well as fractionated CO2 lasers.
The only skin care product that can truly provide a slight tightening effect with regular use is Retin A, or Tretinoin. This is because Vitamin A helps speed up skin cell turnover, helping to boost collagen production.
Tretinoin is thought to cause hyperpigmentation and a poorly tolerated dermatitis when applied to black skin. However, we found that topical tretinoin lightened postinflammatory hyperpigmented lesions in black subjects.
If you stop using the medication or are inconsistent with your treatment, any improvements you see may disappear over time. Always use the product as prescribed by your healthcare provider (Rodan, 2016).
After 4-6 weeks, your skin will get used to tretinoin and will begin to be noticeably smoother and more even. A lot of the initial irritation will settle down and true “retinization” of your skin is in full force.
Skin Discoloration
Tretinoin can fade spots on the face, evening out your skin tone and helping to hide the blotchy coloration that can affect many people's facial skin. In some cases, however, tretinoin can also cause small patches of skin to darken, producing noticeable skin discoloration.
If you suddenly see the pores getting bigger on, for example, your nose, it's the sebum glands in the pores on your nose which have been working overdrive 24-hour shifts. With all this extra sebum to bag up, your pore will eventually begin to lose elasticity aka your pore size will stretch.
It's 20 times more potent than retinol1 and has over 50 years of research to back up its safety and efficacy2. Plus, tretinoin is the only FDA-approved retinoid for photoaging (aka signs of accelerated skin aging like wrinkles, uneven skin tone, and enlarged pores due to repeated sun exposure).
