With any hair-removal technique, there will always be some level of discomfort. Threading, however, is the least painful. This is because the hair is removed directly from the root. If you've ever tweezed your brows, you can compare the feeling of threading to plucking five hairs at once.
This isn't painful per se, but if it's your first time, it may be uncomfortable enough that you need to ask for a short break between brows. Don't be afraid to speak up. After several sessions, many people no longer feel the pain. It's still less painful than waxing and less permanent than microblading.
It can kind of hurt but it also subsides just as quickly. Discomfort also depends on each individual person's sensitivity and the area being threaded. For example, people find the top of their eyebrow being threaded, a lot less painful than the bottom of their brow.
Even though threading has become a more popular option, it is also the more painful and expensive alternative to waxing. While waxing can be used all over the body as well as being quicker and less painful.
Depending on the therapist/your tolerance/the time of the month threading feels like tweezing multiple hairs at at once. Obviously try not to flinch during it, or you could end up with unwanted bald patches.
At home, you can continue to apply an aloe vera cream to soothe your skin. You can also spritz your face with cooling rose water, apply tea tree oil or moisturizer that does not contain perfume or alcohol since these can cause more irritation.
Grow out your brows:
Before sitting for your threading session, it is recommended you let the brow hairs grow out 2-3 weeks in advance. By having your eyebrows with the full hair growth our technician will be able to create the most suitable and desired shape according to your face.
That said, over time, frequent threading can cause the hair follicle to stop growing hair (although, some might consider that an upside). If done incorrectly, the hairs could also break, which can lead to unevenness and ingrown hairs. It's important to find a good tech and avoid any DIY attempts at home.
Even though threading is a gentler hair-removal technique, it can be problematic when it comes to your bikini line. "Like other types of hair removal, there is a risk of irritation, infection, skin abrasions, folliculitis, and ingrown hairs," explains Shah.
You can also place numbing ointment on the area 30 minutes prior to the service. Eyebrow threading can hurt but typically is viewed as a minor annoying discomfort. Once the process is complete, there is some redness that will resolve itself anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes.
Crooks adds that: “You should only thread hair you never want to see again. This is because when the thread wraps around the hair follicle, it breaks it off, causing damage to the follicle, meaning the hair may grow back curly, out of place, or not at all.”
How long do threading results last? Everyone's hair grows at a different rate, but on average, hair removal from threading can last between 2 and 5 weeks. You can also maintain the look for longer with touch-up appointments that are less intensive than a full-scale brow shaping.
How long should I wait before my next threading appointment? Although hair can be removed once it's grown above the surface of the skin, we recommend waiting for about two weeks to give your eyebrows a chance to grow back in so our threading expert can give you the shape you want.
Unlike tweezing, which pulls each individual hair one by one, threading can remove multiple lines of hair at once as the thread is twisted and rolled over the hairs. Each hair is plucked at the follicle level, removing it for up to six weeks.
Threading is a common facial hair removal technique that works well for upper lip hair removal as well. It is fairly less painful than waxing and gives similar results.
No, your hair will never grow thicker or darker after threading. Since threading removes the hair from the root, your hair will become finer over time.
When you thread, there is some hair under the skin which doesn't come out, and this makes your upperlip look green. Let the hair grow completely and then thread it the day of the first function. You could also consider opting for laser therapy for the upperlip.
To find out how safe threading really is, Healthland spoke with dermatologist Amy Derick of Barrington, Ill. Derick says the practice is gentler on the skin than waxing, but it does carry health risks, including the potential spread of the herpes virus and staph infections through dirty threads and broken skin.
When you wax or thread, the technician yanks the hair out at the root. This can damage the hair follicle, so new hairs are weaker and have a harder time poking through the skin – therefore more ingrowns.”
Numb It With Ice
This is by far the easiest and the best way to go about it. Extremely cold temperature tends to make the hair follicles weaker and the skin numb. Washing your face thoroughly with icy cold water also helps a lot, but we recommend that you simply rub an ice cube over the bridge.
Avoid touching the treated area for 2-4 hours. No make-up or perfumed products should be applied for 2-4 hours. Avoid steam treatment or heat source like sun bathing / tanning beds, hot baths or sauna for at least 24 hours. Avoid swimming or spray tanning 24-48 hours post threading.
A specially designed thin needle is used to insert the threads into the skin, minimizing patient discomfort. Patients sometimes experience mild soreness and swelling for a few days after having this procedure, but it can usually be managed with over the counter pain relievers.
