Some skincare formulas can take up to 30 minutes to fully absorb — but that doesn't mean you have to wait that long between skincare steps. Most skincare products are designed to begin absorbing right away.
Considering that no two products are the same, there's no hard and fast answer for how long exactly you need to wait it out based on what you could be using, but dermatologists recommend up to half an hour for the heavier products (lotions, creams, oils). So the cover all answer here is 30 minutes.
Just like water-soluble creams and ointments, fat-soluble ones are absorbed by the skin into the epidermis, then trafficked to the dermis, where the different components then go their separate ways. These paths will be as varied as the components themselves. Your oils are going into lipid metabolic pathways.
Warm It Up
"Space between the cells means there's a greater surface area for absorption, which helps product get in," says dermatologist Heidi Waldorf. Plus, ingredients move through skin and interact with cells more quickly when the skin is warm, says Bank.
Furthermore, peak rates of absorption are reached up to 12–24 hours after application. Fortunately, low absorption does not necessarily translate into low efficacy.
Creams contain contain less oil than water, making it easy for absorption. It is due to their high water content that they are absorbed faster into your skin. Ointments, on the other hand, contain more oil and less water. Ointments are best suited to treat dry skin conditions.
Olive oil penetrates the skin best, but coconut oil, almond oil, and tea tree may be better choices depending upon your skin type.
In general, massage technique does indeed sometimes enhance dermal absorption. In addition to increase skin temperature and blood flow, rubbing likely modifies stratum corneum (SC) structure to enhance diffusion rates and increase retained penetrant amount within the skin.
In general, the rate of absorption of chemicals through skin follows the following scheme from fastest to slowest: Scrotal > Forehead > Armpit ≥ Scalp > Back = Abdomen > Palm = under surface of the foot.
Topically absorbed drugs first penetrate the outer barrier of dead skin cells (stratum corneum), then move through the viable layers of the epidermis to reach the vascularized dermis layer of the skin (see Figure 5-1).
Do not dry skin after bathing - this step is crucial – instead, let the water fall from your body freely; whatever moisture left on the skin will be used for the next step. Apply ointment directly onto the wet skin – although this step may be messy, it is necessary to lock in moisture.
Olive oil is also rich in oleic acid, which penetrates deeply into your skin to reinforce the moisture barrier for long-term skin health and increased elasticity.
Disadvantages of an ointment
1) These oily semisolid preparations are staining and cosmetically less aesthetic. 2) Application with finger tip may contaminate the formulation or cause irritation when applied. 3) As compared to solid dosage forms, semisolid preparation are more bulky to handle.
Exfoliation is a key step in this process. Dead skin clogs pores and keeps your skincare products from being absorbed easily. When you remove the dead skin cell blockade, serums and moisturizers will penetrate deeper.
The absorption of the active ingredient is greater where there is occlusion, such as in the skin folds, under dressings, or when a greasy, ointment formulation is used. Small molecules are more easily absorbed through the skin than large molecules. Lipophilic compounds are better absorbed than hydrophilic compounds.
It's like giving your skin a gentle high-five. By patting with a soft towel, you're saying, “I got you.” You're avoiding unnecessary roughness, keeping those precious oils where they belong, and making sure your skin's shield stays strong.
Wait at least 30 minutes before using any other skin product after you put on fluticasone cream or ointment. If you need to use a dressing, like a bandage or plaster, wait at least 10 minutes after putting fluticasone on. If you're treating a child, do not cover the cream or ointment with dressings or bandages.
Some skincare formulas can take up to 30 minutes to fully absorb — but that doesn't mean you have to wait that long between skincare steps.
Massage Your Face
It improves circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin. It also encourages lymphatic drainage, helping your skin detoxify and look its best. Those gentle strokes can even open your pores, allowing your skincare products to be absorbed more deeply into your skin.
Apply Products to Damp Skin
This is particularly useful for people with dry or eczema-prone skin," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. David Kim. “Damp skin is more permeable than dry skin,” Debbie Thomas adds. “So technically, you should get better absorption of your products if applied directly after cleansing.
“The benefit to applying your products on damp skin is that it allows your skin to better absorb the main ingredients in those products,” says Dr. Farber. When your skin is wet and permeable, it allows most products to penetrate through more easily.
