Drumroll, please! The average tube of lipstick provides 293 swipes. Now, if you applied lipstick three times a day, every day of the week, a single tube of lipstick will last you about three months.
The wrong color may spoil your mood, but the risk of a lipstick or lip-gloss formula spoiling (or growing bacteria) is low since they don't contain water, says Hammer. But since they're repeatedly exposed to the mouth area, he suggests replacing lip products after a year — or if you've recently been sick.
Using the weight test (and assuming that a 'normal' person applies lipstick three times a day, as suggested by Birchbox), you would expect a 3.8g lipstick to last around five months if you used it each day.
Step 1: Cut one fuzzy end off a Q-tip, then use that freshly trimmed end to scoop the remaining lipstick out of the tube and into a small, empty container. Step 2: Point a hair dryer on low at the container to slowly melt the lipstick, being sure to keep the dryer at least ten inches away.

Lip gloss and lipsticks should be replaced every six months, says Linkner, especially if you're prone to perleche—cracking, crusting, or irritation in the corners of the mouth caused by bacteria or fungus. “The lip makeup can harbor those microorganisms and reinfect the skin if you're not careful,” she cautions.
Lipstick is, predictably, a mainstay in most collections. According to the Cheskin & Masten study, the average woman owns seven lipsticks. Of those, 2.6 are used frequently.
When to toss
Lipstick doesn't hold much bacteria, so it can last between 12 – 18 months. Although lipstick and gloss are packed with preservatives such as parabens, essential oils and vitamins to ward off germs, these naturally start to break down after a year.
Lipsticks and chapsticks should be tossed after about a year. I really like to stick to this one because of how bacteria can build up, especially in things like tubed lip glosses and liquid lipsticks. You *can* sanitize lipstick. Just take a paper towel and spritz it with alcohol and gently clean off the lipstick.
Change in color, texture or smell are all big warning signs that your lipstick has expired. If your lipsticks pass the test, Greenberg says to just things clean. "Clean them off, wipe them off, spray them with a little bit of alcohol just to keep them sanitized."
When stored under optimal conditions, unopened lipstick can last a long time. Optimal conditions entail a cool area free of sunlight and high temperatures. The refrigerator is a perfect place. As a rule, makeup experts recommend tossing used lipstick and glosses after one to two years.
Bottom line: When in doubt, throw it out
If your cosmetics are starting to smell funky, nix them. If your liquids are starting to turn a different color, discard them. And if your mascara consistency is starting to resemble that of dry raisins, discard it.
Replace: Since there are varying qualities of makeup brushes, from synthetic to natural bristles and beyond, the lifespan of a regular makeup brush can range from one year to five years, with regular upkeep.
Your skin may react to product ingredients if they have reached their expiration date. This could lead to redness or irritation. If bacteria get into an open container or onto a brush, they can multiply rapidly and cause breakouts or other infections.
Lipstick - 3 Months.
For lipstick this applies to both traditional tube lipsticks and liquid lipsticks. On average you'll use 2 to 3 swipes, which would last for around 3 months if you were to it use everyday. If you did touch ups through out the day, then it would be even quicker.
While matte lipstick is meant to be long lasting, many formulas can leave your lips dry or have color that disappears too quickly. MAC Cosmetics claims their velvety-smooth Matte Lipstick will last for up to 10 hours.
Examples of my personal panning 'times': 3-4 months for a creamy pencil eyeliner. 4 months for a lipstick or lip gloss when rotated with two other lip products. At least 12 months for a pressed face powder and foundation. Closer to 2 years - or more - for a concealer.
It's called lipstick "sweating," and it's actually more common than you think. It happens when the temperature changes around the lipstick, causing emollient ingredients to come to the surface, creating small beads of liquid.
Warm Water
The first hack for dried up liquid lipstick is to place your liquid lipstick tube in hot water for about 10-15 minutes. Don't submerge the cap to avoid getting any water inside the tube that can potentially ruin your liquid lipstick!
Take fresh aloe vera gel and add some to the dried lipstick jar. Mix and apply after 5 minutes. The first hack for dried up liquid lipstick is to place your liquid lipstick tube in hot water for about 10-15 minutes.
Expired lipstick can grow mold. It can cause extreme swelling, skin irritations, or even infections. However, without mold, expired lipstick can become hard, crumble, and difficult to apply properly.
