Always apply oil before washing your hair
“We all know that oil is a great moisturizer and if you want to keep your mane hydrated and frizz-free then you must apply oil before washing your hair,” explains Dr Kapoor. She also adds that hair oil protects the scalp from harsh chemicals.
How long should you leave it on for? While some leave oil in their hair overnight, but usually one-two hours should suffice. “If you apply more oil than you need, thinking you need to coat every strand of your hair with oil, you will need the same amount of shampoo to get it off.
Leave the oil for at least an hour before washing it off.
Leaving the oil overnight is even better. If you are leaving the oil overnight, make sure your hair is covered with a plastic shower cap and wash your hair the next morning.
Here's a handy little trick for applying the oil: we always recommend applying the oil to skin that is still damp or wet. In other words, right after you get out of the shower after blotting off any excess water with a towel, or even while you are still in the shower.
Wrap your hair in a silk scarf or gentle fabric to keep the oil off your pillow covers, and let the treatment do its magic while you sleep. The very next morning, don't get your hair wet or shower! Instead, take your shampoo and apply it directly to your oily hair.
Oil your hair no more than 1 to 2 times a week. Leave it on for approximately an hour or two but you don't need to leave it on longer than that. When you leave oil on too long you run the risk of zits because oil will run down onto your skin and you also don't add any real benefit by leaving it on longer.

Avoid leaving oil in overnight
The longer, the better — that may be true for some hair treatments but not for hair oiling as the oil can block your hair follicles. Unless an ayurvedic doctor or expert has asked you to leave a medicated oil overnight, wash out the oil within 3-4 hours.
Use a hair oil on your scalp and strands before you shower and while in the shower for a deep moisturizing treatment.
Is shower oil the same as body wash or soap? Shower oils do not usually whip into a lather like soaps and body washes, but they still cleanse without stripping the skin of moisture.
