Upholstering the headboard of a solid wood bed is a good beginner DIY project. Probably one of the most important steps to a successful outcome is picking the right piece, one with a flat surface with the exception of the trim framing it.
You'll pay between $200 and $2,000 for most headboard reupholstery.
Cambric is typically used, though calico or hessian/burlap would also be fine. If you don't care what the back of your headboard looks like, then you don't need to worry about this.
Pro: New Furniture May Cost Less Than Reupholstering
For example, the cost to repair a sofa ranges from $600 to $4,000, which is roughly equivalent to what you'll pay for one that's brand new. But fixing a chair seat can be anywhere from $50 to $2,000, so you may find that it could be more affordable than buying new.
DIY upholstery, a simple technique that will have you re-covering chairs, benches, headboards, and even box springs with your own two hands, requires only one tool, and it's a staple gun. The method is not unlike wrapping a present, and the results are more professional-looking than you can imagine.
Bedhead is caused by several things, but the main culprit is friction. When your strands rub against a rough surface like cotton or linen as you sleep, they can become tangled and matted. This can lead to breakage, split ends, and frizz.
How do you attach a bedhead. A bedhead can be attached to any bed frame using a bracket slotting system as long as the bedhead and bed are compatible in size. Alternatively, bedheads can be attached to the wall or even rest against the wall on the floor, held in place by the bed base and mattress.
Linen is perfectly suitable for your new headboard. Our House Linen is a linen blend with a small amount of polyester to make it even more suitable for upholstery. Our Brushed Linen collection is a washable linen union as seen below.
It's not that simple. While it is possible for beginners to handle some small reupholstery projects, you run the risk of seriously messing up a piece of furniture for jobs that are more complicated.
We "recover" throw pillows and loose cushions such as on patio furniture or window seats. We "reupholster" when the fabric is applied over a frame or attached to some sort of structural backing - a headboard for example.
Labor costs for upholstering furniture typically range from about $45 per hour to $150 per hour, depending on the work being done — whether it's re-stuffing cushions, covering the sofa with a new fabric or repairing a furniture frame.
Old fabric should be removed if it is moldy, smelly, or soiled. You should also remove the old fabric if it has a bulky texture or will be visible through the new fabric. If the existing fabric is flat and free of stains or smells, feel free to reupholster right over it.
Foam Guide:
We know that picking the correct foam can be a daunting process. For headboards we recommend a depth of between ½” and 2”.
Upholstered: minimum of two inches thick. Wood: approximately two to four inches thick. Metal: approximately two to four inches thick. Storage: can be up to 10 inches thick.
