Use salicylic acid if you're acne-prone
Mild exfoliation, even during summer months, is key for uneven skin texture, and if you're acne-prone, Dr. Ciraldo recommends exfoliating with salicylic acid to help unblock the clogged pores and blackheads that could be making your pores look bigger and more textured.
Poor skin texture is caused by excessive exposure to UVA rays, wind, dirt, smoking, some medications and lifestyle.
“Uneven skin texture is commonly a result of excess dead skin cells that build up on the surface of the skin,” cosmetic dermatologist Paul Jarrod Frank, MD told Byrdie. “This can make areas of the skin feel rough or bumpy to the touch and can also give the skin a dull appearance.”
Exfoliate. “Periodically exfoliating helps improve your skin texture,” says Dr. Mudgil. “Exfoliate with either a gentle peel or exfoliating wash.” Another great option is to visit your dermatologist for a chemical peel.
Sometimes, though, sebum, dead skin cells, and other substances become trapped inside a pore. A clogged pore may look larger than normal or feel bumpy. Sometimes, a blocked pore can lead to acne, particularly if it becomes inflamed.
Aside from skin texture issues that you can feel, textured skin issues can also affect the complexion of skin through hyperpigmentation, melasma, sallowness, redness, and undereye circles. Dull skin texture is often associated with dry or oily skin that hasn't been properly exfoliated.
Rough skin often occurs when pore-clogging material accumulates on your face. When dirt, daily pollution, dead skin cells, and oil get into your pores, it can lead to pore buildup. This pore buildup can cause dull-looking skin and may even lead to more serious issues like acne and blackheads.
To exfoliate your face mechanically with a scrub, apply gently to the skin with a finger. Rub in small, circular motions. Rinse with lukewarm water. For a chemical exfoliant that's a liquid, apply with a cotton pad or washcloth.
