Washing your face several times a day can further irritate your skin, leading to more breakouts.
The Face Wash Is Working
Some facial products elicit an acne response from your skin to get rid of the dirt and oils just under the surface. This brings the issues to light, heals them, and makes your skin healthier. Of course, that's not always the case.
How often should you wash if you have oily or acne-prone skin? The urge to overcleanse is common in those with oily or acne-prone skin. There's no need to wash the face more than twice a day. In fact, doing so may dry out your skin.
Washing your face in the shower.
Aesthetician Caroline Hirons, told Refinery29 that the shower is way too hot for cleansing, which can dry out your skin and lead to pimples. It's pretty bad for skin in general. You're better off washing with a gentle cleanser after the shower.
By cleansing with water only, you're less likely to over-strip the skin's natural oil and therefore reduce the risk of damaging your skin barrier. Cleansing your face with water only not only reduces the oil-stripping action but also the physical rubbing action, which would reduce irritation to the skin.
“If you have acne-prone skin, you should wash your face at least twice a day,” says Dr. Obayah. “A foaming cleanser can be helpful for oily skin and it's important not to skip out on using moisturizer when you have oily skin (lack of moisture can lead to your skin overproducing oil to keep it hydrated).
If you over-moisturize, the leftover moisturizer just sits on your face. With nowhere to go, this extra moisturizer will eventually fill up the pores on your skin and clog them, resulting in the production of acne, whiteheads, and blackheads.
Sudden acne breakouts can be because of numerous reasons, including hormonal changes or hormonal imbalance, an unhealthy diet including lots of deep fried and junk food, release of cortisol hormones because of excessive stress, excessive production of sebum and much more.
You should absolutely moisturize your skin even if you have active acne. It's an absolute myth that moisturizing your face will worsen your acne. In fact, moisturizers are necessary to keep acne-prone skin as relaxed as possible.
Dry out your skin.
Anytime you irritate your skin, you risk getting more acne. What to do instead: Use acne treatments as directed. If your skin feels dry, apply a moisturizer made for acne-prone skin.

“Warm water is always best as hot can strip the skin of its natural oils and cold does not allow the pores to open to remove dirt,” says Dr.
You may be using unnecessary products. "Some people may just not be genetically predisposed to breakouts or may produce less [oil],” says Batra. If that sounds like you, you may actually find your skin looks better when you ditch your cleanser.
Using a clean, soft washcloth is effective for cleaning your face, but unless you use a new one every day, you should probably stick with using your hands to scrub, Dr. Green says. Also, ideally, you should change the towel you use to dry your face every couple of days to keep bacteria at bay, adds Dr. Gohara.
Most often, acne will go away on its own at the end of puberty, but some people still struggle with acne in adulthood. Almost all acne can be successfully treated, however. It's a matter of finding the right treatment for you.
