“For those with very oily, acne-prone skin, showering more frequently and using antibacterial cleansers can be helpful,” Dr. Herrmann says.
Doing so twice a day is generally fine for your skin and scalp, Dr. Goldenberg said, as long as both showers are quick and you don't have severe eczema or dermatitis.
While hot showers help to unblock pores, it's worth noting that it could aggravate acne problems. Acne happens when there is too much sebum (oil) on the skin. Although a hot shower removes sebum, the removal also triggers the body to produce more sebum after the shower.
Some skin conditions may require you to shower more or less often than the average person. For instance, someone with very oily skin, body acne, or hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) may want to shower every day (or sometimes even twice a day) to keep their skin clean or avoid body odor.

Speaking of breakouts, hot water in your shower isn't as purifying and bacteria-killing as you might think. In fact, Wong says that taking a too-hot shower can actually make acne worse and cause it to spread.
Cold water can be especially beneficial for dry or acne-prone skin, says Knapp. “If you have chronically dry skin, hot water can strip your sebum levels (oils) and exacerbate the issue, so cold water is a good alternative.”
"A morning shower is a great way to stimulate your skin cells, which is particularly important for combination and oily skin types, as well as skin prone to acne," she explains. "Oils can build up on the skin during the night, and a morning shower can help to clear those pores."
Many doctors say a daily shower is fine for most people. (More than that could start to cause skin problems.) But for many people, two to three times a week is enough and may be even better to maintain good health. It depends in part on your lifestyle.
1. The water's too hot or too cold. To get the right temperature for clear skin, you have to play Goldilocks. "Cold water tightens the skin's pores, which doesn't allow the natural secretion of sebum and acne-causing bacteria," says Neil Sadick, MD, of Sadick Dermatology.
The most obvious benefit of a frosty cold shower is the benefit to your skin. Hot water can strip away the natural oils of your skin and dry it out, while cold water helps to constrict blood vessels to temporarily tighten pores and reduce redness.
“Hot water strips the skin of its natural oils and healthy bacteria,” Grous explains, “which plays a major role in keeping moisture in—and the bad stuff out. And because dryness triggers the sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, hot water can worsen preexisting acne or cause a breakout.”
Mistake #2. Showering for too long Between the steam, streaming water, and warmth, it's tempting to spend 15, 20, even 30 minutes in the shower, but many experts say anything more than 10 minutes is too much. “You shouldn't shower for more than 5 to 10 minutes,” says Dr.
