Many teens find that their acne improves as they get older and that it almost disappears by the time they reach their twenties. Others have acne well into their adult years. The good news is that acne can be treated — and breakouts can sometimes be prevented. Prevention involves taking good care of the skin.
Will my acne ever go away? Most often, acne will go away on its own at the end of puberty, but some people still struggle with acne in adulthood. Almost all acne can be successfully treated, however. It's a matter of finding the right treatment for you.
Acne commonly starts during puberty between the ages of 10 and 13 and tends to be worse in people with oily skin. Teenage acne usually lasts for five to 10 years, normally going away during the early 20s. It occurs in both sexes, although teenage boys tend to have the most severe cases.
Stage 4: Severe acne
In the most severe stage, acne becomes extremely painful. There will be numerous pustules, cysts, papules and nodules in the affected area or on various parts of the body.
Some adults continue to get acne well into their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. It is even possible to get acne for the first time as an adult. Dermatologists call this “adult-onset acne.” It is most common among women going through menopause.
If you have acne that just won't go away, you may want to take a closer look at your skin. It's possible that you don't have acne. Other skin conditions can look a lot like acne. Stubborn acne can also be a sign of something serious going on inside your body.
If your skin remains smooth in dark or red areas, you simply have an acne mark. Those marks are not scars — they are just temporarily discolored. It usually takes 3-6 months for the marks to disappear. However, if you have a scar, you're dealing with permanent skin damage that needs treatment in order to disappear.
Acne is the most common skin condition in teenagers. Most people will have acne to some degree during puberty. About 15 to 30 out of 100 teenagers have moderate to severe acne. It is much more common in boys than in girls.
Acne develops when sebum — an oily substance that lubricates your hair and skin — and dead skin cells plug hair follicles. Bacteria can trigger inflammation and infection resulting in more severe acne.
A simple face wash, moisturizer and a targeted serum (like one with acne-fighting ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid) can go a long way. Don't forget to wash your face, especially before bed to prevent clogged pores and a buildup of oil.
Why is acne so hard to treat? Because there are so many different factors involved: plugging of pores and oil production for starters. Inflammation is really critical; studies are showing that even on the skin of acne patients where one doesn't see acne, there are inflammatory factors on a molecular level.
Stress, hormones, and certain medications can also contribute to chronic acne. Studies also indicate that a diet high in dairy and carbohydrate-rich foods may worsen acne. Your diet won't cause acne, but it can make it harder to get rid of.
There are a few reasons a pimple might not be going away. It's normal for some types of acne—especially deep, large pimples—to take some time to clear up. You might also have persistent pimples if you're not taking care of your skin, taking certain medications, or have certain health conditions.
At its root, adult acne is caused by the same things that cause teen acne: excess skin oil and bacteria. Any changes in hormones, including those brought on by pregnancy and menstruation, can trigger excess oil. Women who smoke also seem to be more prone to acne.
A range of topical medications, including benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, azelaic acid, salicylic acid, or antibiotics, may be prescribed for your acne. These can be placed directly on the skin to treat existing breakouts and prevent future ones.
Skincare – applying the wrong skincare (e.g. if oily skin type and applying heavy moisturiser containing comedogenic ingredients such as oils) can lead to worsening of your acne. Stress, lack of sleep, smoking, diet can all influence acne too.
There could be several reasons behind this skin issue. But stress, smoking, unhealthy eating habits, and alcohol could play a major role in such breakouts.
"Stress acne, unlike your regular breakouts, usually occurs on the oiliest parts of your face—your forehead, nose, and chin areas," says Shereene Idriss, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist at New York City's Union Square Laser Dermatology.
What does hormonal acne look like? Whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, cysts and nodules are all common hormonal acne symptoms. Normally, whiteheads and blackheads do not cause pain, inflammation or swelling, but if they do, then they are most likely forming into cysts and pustules.
If the acne isn't getting better after around ten weeks of treating it, though, it's time to call the dermatologist. If it's actually getting worse, it's definitely time to call the doctor. Moderate or severe acne should always be seen by a dermatologist.
Anxiety, depression, and stress can cause acne breakouts in people who have underlying acne. Again, science doesn't yet fully understand all the reasons why this happens.
