If you want noticeably plumper lips but don't want to go too far, a half syringe of filler may be enough. This will give you a more natural-looking and subtle result. However, this all depends on the current size of your lips, so a full syringe may be necessary.
0.5ml is a great introductory filler amount for first-time lip filler clients, especially if you're nervous of what the result will be. Remember you will swell after treatment a little, so you will not see major change with 0.5ml after the treatment has settled over the first 2-4 weeks.
A half syringe of filler can make difference and is a great place to start for some individuals who are nervous or want a very subtle change. They are typically used for lip enhancement, treating a few fine lines, or to touch up areas that need a little more volume.
A client who opts for one full syringe of filler can expect their results to last between 6 months to 1.5 years. Those who opt for half a syringe of filler can expect their results to last for a maximum of 6 months.
Answer: Storing Juvederm
Thank you for your question. While some physicians do offer to save opened, partially used syringes of filler for future use, I generally recommend against this. Fillers like Juvederm are formulated and sealed as sterile products, to prevent the risk of deep infections in skin after treatment.
If there is any filler left over (for example if you just use a half syringe), we can dispose of the remaining filler or you can elect to have it injected in other areas of the face during that same session.
Yes, it is perfectly acceptable to ask for less than a full syringe of Juvederm for your lips. However, you would have to pay for a full syringe still, the syringes are not divisible among patients. There are typically other places on the face the remainder of the syringe can be used so it isn't wasted.
For touch-ups, which we advise every 6 to 12 months, 0.5ml is usually recommended. We would not usually recommend less than 1ml for an initial lip filler appointment to achieve noticeable-yet-natural-looking results.
Conversely, for those patients who want a subtle change, with hydrated/rejuvenated and slightly defined lips, 0.5ml overall is the right amount. But, if you want an instant plump of the lips and a fuller look, 1ml of lip filler is the best choice.
People with higher metabolisms will experience shorter filler results because their bodies will break the filler compound down faster than those with slower metabolisms. The same goes for other treatments such as BOTOX® and Dysport®.
If you choose to use half of a syringe, it will give you a very subtle change and a more natural look. If you are wanting a noticeable change, I would recommend a full syringe. You will instantly swell after injecting lips but you can look when finished with half the syringe and decide at that point if you want more.
It typically takes about 4 weeks for the filler to settle in and achieve the final, desired look. The results will typically last about 6 months.
You should NEVER use half a syringe, unless the other half of the syringe is going to be used on yourself, that same day, on another part of the face or body.
Often our patients ask “Will more than 1ml of dermal filler look overfilled?” They're concerned about looking “obvious” or “done”. In reality, when premium filler is used correctly and expertly placed, your treatment results will look subtle and natural, even beyond that first ml.
The Rule of Thirds: Top To Bottom Lip Ratio
Whether you want dramatic volume or an enhanced but natural-looking appearance, Kellie recommends following the rule of thirds. That is, the top lip should be 1/3 of your total lips and your bottom lip 2/3, but it will also depend on your natural shape.
Hyaluronic acid, or HA, naturally occurs in the body and not only attracts moisture (and volume) to the lips but also stimulates the lips' own ability to produce more collagen. This means you get immediate, natural-looking results and you also see a gradual improvement in your lip area as collagen increases. Dr.
0.5 ml is a small quantity and will only produce subtle results. There is no reason why you need to wait a "few months" prior to receiving more filler.
Lip fillers can add volume and fullness to thin lips and treat lip lines and wrinkles. Lip fillers produce immediate results.
The generally accepted standard is to inject 1ml of lip filler every 6 months, however we recommend infrequent filling of the lips, and to use only small amounts with each session.
Fillers usually last around 6-12 months. Therefore, I recommend all my clients to have regular 'tweakments' using that time frame. Once we have established a good base shape and volume of your lips, they are much easier to maintain in this way and this is where 0.55ml is perfect.
The rule of thumb I use is; If you are only wanting either “just the top lip” or “just the bottom lip” to be larger, a 0.5ml will Typically produce the desired outcome. The majority of the dermal filler will be placed in the area that is of concern, with any minor remaining filler to define and contour the remaining.
1ml of dermal filler falls within the average amount. It still creates a natural increase. Everything over 1ml creates a more dramatic look, and this is something that should be taken into consideration by patients. 1ml of dermal filler can be used in the lower lip as well as the upper lip.
Sharing syringes, even if the needle is changed, can transmit disease. Dermal filler syringes do not come with one-way valves which allows for potential back flow of blood inside the syringe.
In short, yes, one syringe of filler can make a difference. However, if you want an exaggerated result, or have lost a large amount of volume you may require additional syringes. Your injector can determine this during a consultation by examining your anatomy.
Most commonly, just 1 syringe is used for augmenting the lips, regardless of the type of filler you use. Occasionally, we will build up to 2 or even 3 syringes in the lips for a patient, but this is usually an older patient who has lost some of the definition and structure in the lips, as well as volume.
