As an at-home option, you can shave your upper lip hair (a.k.a dermaplaning), which removes the hair and gently exfoliates the skin for a smooth-looking complexion. If you're looking for a more permanent solution, laser hair removal is your best bet.
Dermaplaning temporarily removes the entire layer of facial hair known as vellus hair — dermaplaning does not permanently remove hair. Over time, facial hair grows back after dermaplaning.
At $75 to $200 per session, dermaplaning isn't cheap. There is an ecofriendly at-home option ($75), but you'll have to buy replacement blades every month. And for maximum benefits, Benjamin recommends dermaplaning at home every week, which can get a little laborious.
You actually do not need to worry, as waxing or removing darker or thicker facial hair does not make more hair grow, or make hairthicker, as the myth leads people to believe.
A female mustache can be removed through waxing because the wax sticks to the hair. As the wax is removed, the hair is also removed from the root. For women who don't want to pay for waxing either at the salon or the drugstore, sugar wax recipes that can be easily made at home are available online.
While waxing is efficient for large sections of skin like the hands and legs, threading is better for small areas like the upper lip. “The reason why threading is ideal for all skin types is because the pressure of it can be adjusted accordingly,”Aparna tells us.
However, repeated ripping of the hair from its follicle via waxing or plucking (which is essentially the same thing, when you think about it) will make hair grow back thicker, darker and coarser… and frequently, more plentiful and faster to re-grow.
The Cons of Dermaplaning
Compared to other hair-removal treatments like waxing and tweezing, dermaplaning can be a bit more expensive. And unlike waxing, dermaplaning does not fully remove hair from its follicle, so hairs might grow back a bit sooner than other methods.
Dermaplaning has little to no impact on how your hair will look when it grows back. If you have unwanted hair on your chin, or on other areas of your face, dermaplaning is a fantastic, noninvasive way to remove it and leave you with immediately glowing, radiant skin as a result.
What is dermaplaning? Originally an in-office procedure, dermaplaning has now been adapted to be safe for at-home use. The derm version involves a surgical scalpel, applied with steady pressure to remove layers of dead skin cells and peach fuzz for the ultimate exfoliation treatment.
Hirsutism is excess hair growth on the body or face. It's caused by excess hormones called androgens. For women, the hair may grow in places where men often have a lot of hair, but women often don't. This includes the upper lip, chin, chest, and back.
Women develop excessive body or facial hair due to higher-than-normal levels of androgens, including testosterone. All females produce androgens, but the levels typically remain low. Certain medical conditions can cause a woman to produce too many androgens.
Combine one part lemon juice to four parts honey (about one tablespoon to four tablespoons) in a pot on the stove and heat until warm, though not scalding. "You can also add some sugar to the mix to act as an extra binding agent," says Joshi, making this more of a sugaring-wax hybrid (more on sugaring in a moment).
Vitamin B6 and Vitamin E
Dietary supplements that contain vitamins B6 and E are also believed to help get rid of unwanted hair growth in the facial areas. For one, vitamin B6 is thought to help lower testosterone in women and inhibit prolactin hormone production.
Often, irritated skin will be itchy, red or tender. But if the irritation is very subtle, you might not even know that it's happening! Darkening above the upper lip is super common after hair removal—and not just from shaving. Waxing and depilatories can also sometimes cause irritation and darkening of the skin.
Does vitamin E oil increase hair growth in females by applying it on the face? Yes, Vitamin E oil is widely used to repair hair follicles and promotes hair growth. But if you mix vitamin E oil with your regular moisturizer in moderate quantity then it does not promote facial hair growth.
Apply sunscreen at least half an hour before you step out. Avoid waxing the area and choose threading instead. - Dermatologist Geeta Oberoi suggests a few other options. “Skin lightening creams, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser resurfacing are other alternatives,” she ends.
