Does Burt's Bees lip balm dry out lips? From my experience, no, Burt's Bees lip balm does not dry out lips. It's designed to keep the moisture in and prevent moisturise loss. It contains several moisturising ingredients that make skin smoother and several ingredients help to relieve any dryness.
While the formulation of this product does contain moisturizing ingredients, it also contains ingredients that are known to potentially trigger allergic contact dermatitis of the lips, including flavors and lanolin.
The Burt's Bees scrub gets the job done with gentle honey crystals. Plus, it adds moisture with the brand's famed beeswax, which derms say is hands down the best ingredient to use on winter-chapped lips.
"Lip balms that contain only humectant ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin, can actually make lips more dry because they attract moisture, and if the air is very low in humidity, then they can pull moisture out of the skin, and then the moisture evaporates away," King says about healing lip cracks.
Beeswax provides extra moisture to your lips and locks in the hydration keeping them extremely soft, supple, and plump.
Avoid lip balms that contain menthol, camphor, phenol or any sort of alcohol. These ingredients may provide an immediate cooling sensation but can irritate the skin. In some cases they even remove the outer layers of skin leaving your lips unprotected and susceptible to environmental hazards.
Apply a non-irritating lip balm (or lip moisturizer) several times a day and before bed. If your lips are very dry and cracked, try a thick ointment, such as white petroleum jelly. Ointment seals in water longer than waxes or oils. Slather on a non-irritating lip balm with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors.
Choose ointments or balms
While they can temporarily soothe dry lips, they tend to have chemicals (like the aforementioned menthol) and flavors that can further irritate the skin, and in severe cases, trigger eczema and allergic contact dermatitis, Marchbein said.
"These formulas create an artificial barrier to lock in moisture, but when overused, can cause lips to become lazy because the skin doesn't have to work to maintain its own hydration level," Zeichner explains, adding you have to wean yourself off your lip balm addiction and tolerate a little dryness before your lips ...
The reviews are mainly positive , with most customers enjoying extra hydrated lips after using it. They say that it glides on easily and is smooth and thick without leaving a sticky residue. When given the choice between Burt's Bees Lip Balm and the Vaseline Lip Therapy Stick, we would have to choose Vaseline .
They both are great although I do think Burt's Bees is a lot more moisturizing. I don't have to reapply multiple times during the day. Chapstick though, I do have to apply a lot; which can get pretty annoying. Burt's bees is definitely more moisturizing, and they have better flavors too.
While coconut oil may be used in place of your daytime lip balm, it can also work well as an overnight treatment mask. The key here is to combine the oil with a thicker protectant, such as honey. You can use equal parts and mix honey and coconut oil until a thick cream forms.
Constantly applying these to your lips could cause long-lasting damage to your skin or otherwise dry out your lips instead of making them more moisturized.
As a non-glandular mucous membrane, your lips do not have the ability to generate their own moisture. They do not contain the same concentration of oil-producing sebaceous glands as the rest of the body and are therefore less lubricated and more susceptible to dryness and peeling.
When your lips are dehydrated, it can be tempting to lick and moisten them. The effect is temporary and might make things worse. Licking your lips coats them in a layer of your saliva, which contains enzymes and chemicals used to digest food in your mouth. These enzymes can lead to additional dryness.
Phenol, Menthol & Salicylic acid
Piliang says, “Lip balms that contain ingredients like phenol, menthol, and salicylic acid make the lips drier. Sometimes these cause a tingling feeling when you apply them. They either cause irritation or literally remove the outer layers of the skin.
The secret to dealing with dry, sore, chapped lips is to find a way to lock in moisture and protect the lips from the cold, dry air. Vaseline® Healing Jelly is an excellent choice as it forms a protective layer on the lips and penetrates deep down to rehydrate the skin and speed up the its natural renewal process.
