The U.S. Army first began allowing soldiers to have tattoos in 2015. It noted how tattoos have grown in popularity among younger people, citing research by the Army's Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) showing that 41% of those between the ages of 18 and 34 have at least one or more.
While the armed forces have content prohibitions for tattoos, the policies have evolved and become less restrictive regarding size and location. The current policies permit tattoos almost anywhere on the body except for on the head and face.

Navy Tattoo Policy and Regulations

Army Tattoo Policy
It prohibits any tattoos on the head, face, neck, wrists, hands, or above the t-shirt collar. Essentially, any visible body tattoos are prohibited. The only exception is one ring tattoo per hand where a regular ring would lie.
One answer to why the special forces have beards is that they need to blend in. The military allows the special forces “relaxed grooming standards” not because of folliculaphilia but because of the jobs they do.
All five military branches restrict tattoo content. You're going to have to remove any tattoos based on drugs, sex, violence, or gang affiliation. Similarly, your ink cannot discriminate against sex, religion, or race.
Prohibited tattoos include designs that may be racist or sexist. They may also include any tattoo that is extremist or supremacist or depicts any messages of this kind. The Air Force also has a ban on any tattoo that is affiliated or connected to gangs and gang culture.
The Coast Guard is the only service branch that permits one other hand tattoo. This second kind is allowed between the wrist and first knuckle, as long as it's not bigger than 1 inch in diameter. These few restrictions mean that almost anything goes in the military in 2021-2022 with regards to tattoos.
The Navy has one of the most relaxed tattoo policies of all the military branches. If you have loads of tattoos, big tattoos, loud tattoos, and pretty much anything in-between, the US Navy might be your best bet.
Tattoos NOT Allowed Because of Content
The Marine Corps tattoo policy for 2022 states that ink is never allowed which is “prejudicial to good order and discipline.” Furthermore, tattoos that are “drug-related, gang-related, extremist, obscene or indecent, sexist, or racist” are not authorized under any circumstances.
