In truth, no certain hair type is completely immune to lice infestations. With the texture of kinky hair, you might assume that they're resistant to lice. That's a myth. Lice can affix themselves to any type of hair—coarse, thick, smooth or thin.
This, however, is a myth. The truth of the matter is, despite the texture of their hair, African American people can and do, get head lice. In fact, often some of the most severe infestations we see are in individuals with African American hair. Head lice like hair, they do not care what type of hair.
There is no specific hair type that lice prefer. All lice need is a clean strand of hair to attach to. It doesn't matter the thickness, the length, if it's been colored, if it's straight, or if it's curly. It has been found that people with longer hair tend to report getting lice.
Firstly, it is important to understand that all types of hair can get head lice and no hair type is immune to them. In fact, curly hair is often more vulnerable to catching them because it has more volume than straight or thin hair.
Body lice most often affect people who aren't able to bathe or wash clothing often, such as homeless people. Pubic lice, also called crabs, that occur on the skin and hair of the pubic area. Less often, they may be found on coarse body hair, such as chest hair, eyebrows or eyelashes.
Lice and nits can't survive the high heat. It's true that lice and nits can't survive temperatures above 113°F (45°C). This makes them susceptible to any heat source, such as a hairdryer or the plates of a hair straightener.
Hairspray makes it harder for the louse to grab hold. The smell of hairspray and the use of solvents (sad but true) in them can also deter creepy crawlies from finding their way in. Not to mention that if you're tying longer hair back, you've got a double whammy.
Lice are attracted to the blood they get through your scalp – short, long, clean or dirty. Doesn't matter! You have to clean every crevice of your house after a lice infestation.
In fact, adults can get lice anytime their hair is in close contact with the hair of someone who has lice. Whether public transportation, concerts, or crowded areas, any situation in which there is hair to hair contact puts adults at risk of getting lice.
Lice don't care if hair has been colored. As long as a louse can grab on to a hair strand, it can make its way to the head where its food supply (blood) is. Myth #6: Lice like dirty hair. Head lice actually prefer clean hair since it is easier for the female to attach her eggs.
So one of the best ways to prevent head lice from spreading is to wear a very tight hairstyle. Lice are similar to monkeys on a vine. They need something to grab onto when they are moving from head to head. If hair is in a tight bun or braid, it makes it more difficult for the lice to move to another head.
7) Tying wet hair: Most of us do not realise it but the major cause of hair damage begins when you tie your wet/ semi-dry hair. Doing so can lead to major hair problems like hair loss, hair thinning and in extreme cases, baldness. In addition, it can lead to dandruff problems, lice and scalp infections.
"We find that you can get head lice on almost every type of hair imaginable — thick, thin, long, short, clean, dirty — it really doesn't make a difference," Dr Webb said. Having particularly thick or long hair might increase your chances of picking up head lice, simply because you have more available hair.
Any braid type that keeps your hair pulled back and contained is perfect for helping to prevent your contact with head lice. A bun keeps all of your hair gathered together and pulled back out of your face, also a great style for keeping it away from lice.
That being said, African Americans are significantly less prone to getting head lice due to their beautiful and wonderfully textured hair. The texture of their hair makes it more difficult for lice to adhere to the hair shaft.
Make sure you comb their hair and add a few drops of natural oil, mixing in a little tea tree oil, and applying to their scalp. Tea tree oil is known to kill and repel lice - but more on that below. Doing this step every morning before school is essential.
Adults are not immune to head lice. In fact, if you have any close contact with children or even parents of children you can be at risk of catching them if they have them. Lice transfer primarily through head to head contact, so you would have to get close to the other person.
An adult head louse can live about 30 days on a person's head but will die within one or two days if it falls off a person. Adult female head lice are usually larger than males and can lay about six eggs each day.
The most common symptom of head lice is itching, especially on the back of your head and neck and near your ears — areas where lice are more likely to live. Symptoms of head lice include: Feeling like something in your hair is moving (tickling).
But follow these simple steps to help prevent another lice attack: Wash and dry bedding, clothing, and stuffed toys using hot water (130 F) and high heat. If the items can't be washed, seal them in a plastic bag for 3 weeks. Dry cleaning also kills lice.
While head lice do prefer to be warm, the winter does slow the spread of lice. Nits won't hatch if they get below room temperature. Lucky for them they survive off the heat of their human hosts not the outside temperature.
Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes. Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5–10 minutes.
Coconut, tea tree oil, lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon grass, and peppermint are scents popularly believed to repel lice. Using any coconut scented shampoo and conditioner is an easy way to increase your defense. At 1% concentration, tea tree oil killed 100% of head lice after 30 minutes.
Rosemary Repel Daily Shampoo combines rosemary, citronella, tea tree, anise, lavender and geranium oils to help repel lice.
Benzyl alcohol lotion, 5% has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of head lice and is considered safe and effective when used as directed. It kills lice but it is not ovicidal. A second treatment is needed 7 days after the first treatment to kill any newly hatched lice before they can produce new eggs.
